German woodcut of the fifteenth century. Dama con abito damascato.
Germania, metà XVI sec.

Xilografia tedesca; mm. 329 x 298, piccoli margini; immagine entro cornice lineare nera.

Condition Report

German woodcut; mm. 329 x 298; lower margins; illustration within black linear frame.

Beautiful German woodcut from the 16th century. It is of gret interest in the history of costume; it depicts a lady of high rank, as can be seen from the necklaces with strings of pearls; portrayed standing beneath a decorated marble arch, she wears a sumptuous dress of Spanish style. The damask dress with floreal motifs consists of a large ruff, the rigid and elongated bodice on the wide skirt, enriched with folds. During the 16th century the European lady began to elaborate her linear and soft dress: her skirt is supported by a light armor, which in Spanish fashion will be called verdugade, or guardian of virtue. Precisely to this bell shape of the skirt must be ascribed the first example of those bodily constraints that will inhibit the naturalness of the female body, accentuated in the seventeenth century to persist, with different styles and modes, until the beginning of the twentieth century. Excellent impression complete at the framing line plus a few millimeters of margin, in excellent condition. Skilled restoration on the lower right corner mainly visible on the verso.
