Condition Report

A finely engraved, large atlas, showing mainly Greek, Etruscan and Roman art. Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717 -1768) was "...a German art historian and archaeologist. He was a pioneering Hellenist who first articulated the difference between Greek, Greco-Roman and Roman art. 'The prophet and founding hero of modern archaeology, Winckelmann was one of the founders of scientific archaeology and first applied the categories of style on a large, systematic basis to the history of art. Many consider him the father of the discipline of art history" (wikipedia). This atlas forms part of "A pioneering work in the field of archaelogical methodology... The term "unpublished" as used here refers not only to coins, statues, cameos, bas-reliefs, and other "monuments" never before reproduced on plates, but also to many that had hitherto been misrepresented or left entirely unexplained (Leppmann). Brunet: "cette édition est accompagnée d'un atlas composé d'environ 200 planches in folio". No titlepage issued as far as we know. The third plate caption states "Giovanni Winkelmann Antiquario 1717-1768, Gio. Fed Reiffenstein P. 1772 and includes a fine engraved portrait of this famous archeologist. Brunet 5, p. 1462
