Condition Report

First Italian version of "The structure and distribution of coral reefs" (London, 1842), very important monograph on corals, coral reefs and their geological formation, atolls and madreporic islands (the first hypotheses formulated regarding the formation of atolls), the volcanoes, fruit of the observations made by Darwin in his journey on the "Beagle". In the course of that legendary navigation, Darwin hypothesized that the atolls were formed by coral rocks located at 1400 meters of depth and posed the problem of how the corals, which normally live in warm and shallow waters, could grow at those depths. Darwin advanced the hypothesis that the bottom of the sea and the islands were slowly sunk and that, at the same time, the corals were instead kept growing up on the skeletons of dead corals.
