The author taught in Padua and was one of the highest representatives of the iatro-physics school; this work is a classic on metabolism, diet, motion, sleep, pulsology and so on. He invented the clinical thermometer and describes it. Fulton, History of Physiology p. 161: ?Santorio introduced the use of instruments of precision for making measurements and is regarded as the founder of the modern study of metabolic processes.? The work had many reprints.
