Condition Report

Rare first issue of one of the rarest Aldine Press books, the "Catullus," with the misprint "Propetius" on the title-page, and the error in the header of the preface. The poems of the three most important elegiac authors of the late Roman republic and the first imperial era are brought together. The poems of Catullus, Propertius and Tibullus revealed a new poetic sentiment that rejected the heroic character of the epic tradition in favor of a more familiar tone and intimate subjects such as love, erotic desire, rejection and mourning. "
Work edited by Aldus Manutius and Girolamo Avanzi, as appears in the latter's epistle to Marino Sannuto which is found after the work of Catullus (f. F2v-F4v). The heading of the preface by Aldus Manutius on the verso of the Titlepage reads "... Marino Sannuto patritio Veneto Benedicti filio" ("Benedicti" incorrect, corrected in "Leonardi" in the second issue of the edition)
