Biglietto autografo a Mr. Gladstone

1876

“My dear Mr Gladstone On Monday then – if all be well as you are good compte to say that you will manage anything rather than lose my visit - will you manage that I can have my pipe in my own room whenever I like?”

Un foglio in 8vo, 176x114 mm. Inchiostro nero, rapido corsivo, firma in fine.

The Pittsburg Daily: “Poet Laureate smoked a long clay and hated Florence because the tobacco there was bad … Carlyle, describing Tennyson, said ‘Smokes infinite tobacco.’ … Wherever he went he must be allowed to smoke. Accepting an invitation to visit Mr. Gladstone on 1876, he wrote: “As you are good enough to say … I can have my pipe in my room whenever I like?” Cfr. The Pittsburg Daily Headlight from Pittsburg, Kansas, January 25, 1911; The Galveston Daily News from Galveston, Texas, November 20, 1910; The Walnut Valley Times from El Dorado, November 28, 1910.
