First edition. The work is part of Taxil's anti-Masonic program, and boasts the heading, before the title, "Révélations complètes sur la Franc-Maçonnerie". An ambiguous and sinister character, Taxil initially published scurrilous and anti-Catholic books, which portrayed the ecclesiastical hierarchies as hedonistic and sadistic. On February 28, 1881 he was initiated into Masonry in the lodge of the Grand Orient of France Le Temple des amis de l'honneur français but was excluded on September 17 of the same year. On April 14, 1884 he professed to have converted from Judaism to Catholicism, was solemnly received into the Catholic Church and repudiated his previous works.] In the last decade of the century he wrote a series of books and pamphlets in which he denounced Freemasonry and accused the lodges. to worship the devil: he even published a newspaper entitled La France chrétienne anti-maçonnique.
