Acquaforte di 123x104 mm. Incollata su cartoncino agli angoli. Bell’esemplare.

Tiratura di fine Settecento. Bella impressione del XVIII secolo del quinto e ultimo stato di Bartsch, il sesto stato di sette di Usticke, il settimo e ultimo stato di New Hollstein, con forti contrasti, stampata dopo che la lastra era stata abilmente ritoccata, in cui il bordo sinistro dell'abito a sinistra del libro č nettamente definito.
Il ritratto inciso di Rembrandt di van der Linden doveva accompagnare una pubblicazione degli scritti di Ippocrate sulla medicina, con un commento del medico olandese. Tra le condizioni stipulate per la commissione dell’opera, c'era l'incisione del ritratto. Tuttavia, Rembrandt ha scelto di fare un'incisione, che č probabilmente la ragione per cui il suo ritratto di van der Linden non č stato incluso nella pubblicazione. Questo ritratto di Jan Antonides van der Liden č l'ultima incisione nota di Rembrandt. Ha basato questo ritratto postumo di un uomo che probabilmente non aveva mai visto su un ritratto dipinto di Abraham van den Temple.

Condition Report

Etching of 123x104 mm. Glued to the corners on cardboard. Nice specimen.

Issue of the end of XVIII century. A fine 18th century impression of Bartsch’s fifth and final state, Usticke’s sixth state of seven, New Hollstein’s seventh and final state, with strong contrasts throughout, printed after the plate was skillfully retouched, in which the left border of the gown to the left of the book is sharply defined.
The engraved portrait of Rembrandt by Van der Linden was to accompany a publication of Hippocrates' writings on medicine, with a comment by the Dutch doctor. Among the conditions stipulated for the commission of the work, there was the portrait engraving. However, Rembrandt chose to make an engravings, which is probably the reason why his portrait of Van der Linden was not included in the publication. This portrait of Jan Antonides van der Liden is Rembrandt's last known etching. He based this portrait of a man who probably had never seen a painted portrait of Abraham van den Temple.
