3 opere in un volume in 8vo. 160x108 mm. Legatura coeva in pelle di scrofa con impressioni a secco, fermaglio in argento, rinnovato. Restauro al Frontespizio dell’opera di Kempis e prime pagine con lieve foxing, per il resto pallida velatura di umidità che investe parte delle pagine, ma bell’esemplare marginoso nella sua legatura originale.

1. Prima edizione basilese di questo popolare libro devozionale. Opera magnificamente figurata. Contiene una serie di 36 xilografie molto suggestive sulla vita di Cristo, attribuite a due incisori di Basilea, il Maestro della Bereitung di Ludwig Moser e il Maestro della Haintz Narr. Queste illustrazioni furono di ispirazione per la Piccola Passione di Durer. Hass: “The series of woodcuts for the Horologium greatly contributed to Dürer’s conception of his Small Passion.”
Davies: “The author’s name is given on a2 … The reason of the title is given below, which is that of the Life of Christ is, like the natural day, divided into 24 hours, a summary of the main events in the Life being given on a2 v-3. Thus, the 1st hour is the Annunciation and so on to the 24th hour, which is the Day of Judgment… Contains 36 remarkable woodcuts of early appearance, mostly in outline and with double-line borders forming solid black squares at the angles”.

Restoration to the Title-page of the work by Kempis and first pages with slight foxing, otherwise pale dampstaining affecting part of the pages, but a fine copy with margin in its original binding.

1. First Basel edition of this popular devotional book. Beautifully illustrated work. Contains a series of 36 very striking woodcuts on the life of Christ, attributed to two Basel engravers, the Master of the Bereitung of Ludwig Moser and the Master of the Haintz Narr.
