Paris, Le Hay, Ducange, 1714 – Jacques Collombat, 1715

2 opere in un volume in-folio grande. 495x320 mm. Bell’esemplare.

Prima edizione magnificamente figurata.
Blackmer: “The plates are after drawings by J. B. Van Mour who was established in Constantinople for many years during the first half of the 18th c. It has been suggested that he came to Constantinople in 1699, possibly as part of Ferriol's entourage. He is known to have died there in 1737 at the age of 66. Much of his work was done for Cornelius Calkoen, who was Dutch ambassador to the Porte, and some of these paintings are now to be found in the Amsterdam Rijkmuseum. This publication certainly contained the most popular and influential illustrations of Turkish dress to date. Its use as a source book was wide-spread.”

Beautifully illustrated first edition. The most remarkable illustrated book of the Ottoman Empire, with portraits and scenes of Ottoman life, which significantly influenced the European perception of Ottoman culture and initiated the fashion for Turks in Rococo art.
The plates are copper-engraved by P. Simonneau, G Scotin, J. Hussard, Cochin and others, based on the drawings of the Flemish-French painter Jean Baptiste Vanmour or Van Mour, 1671 - 1737, who is especially famous for his detailed depiction of life in the Ottoman Empire during the Tulip Era and the rule of Sultan Ahmed III.
This publication certainly contained the most popular and influential illustrations of Turkish dress to date. Its use as a source book was wide-spread.”
The second work, which contains a description of the illustrations, bears its own title page with the date 1715 and the title ‘Explication des cent estampes qui représentent différentes nations du Levant.
In this copy, the three additional plates, 101, 102 and the music page, which were published in the 1715 edition of the Explication, have been mounted at the end of the first work, after plate 100.
A fine copy in contemporary binding, from the library of Michel Joseph Hyacinthe Lallemant de Betz (1693-1773), fermier général and collector, whose collection of prints was added to the Cabinet des estampes de la Bibliothèque royale in 1753.
