GAMELIN, Jacques. Three plates on the anatomy of the human skull.
Toulouse, Imprimerie de J. F. Desclassan, MDCCLXXIX [1779]
Three engravings on copper; platemarks of two sheets about of 350x248 mm. and one platemark of 265x140 mm. Large original sheets with wide margins. The smaller sheets in the text with wide margins too. Good specimen.
Elegant plates depicting the skull and its bones come from “Nouveau Recueil d'Ostéologie et de Myologie, dessiné d'après nature par Jacques Gamelin de Carcassonne, Professeur de Peinture, de l'Académie de Saint Luc de Rome, pour l'utilité des sciences et des arts...”, an evocative illustrated work that saw only one edition, known for the author's talent and imagination.
To realise his work on osteology and myology, Gamelin had set up a dissection workshop in Toulouse, where he drew and engraved his fantastic anatomical compositions himself with the help of two of his best pupils, Martin and Lavallée.
