Folio. 290x200 mm. Legatura in pergamena floscia. Carte [44]. Segn.: a-l4. Bianca la c. l4. Il quaderno ‘d’ rilegato tra le segnature f e g. Frontespizio in rosso e nero con illustrazione xilografica, diagrammi xilografici in tutto il testo, carattere corsivo e romano. Nota di possesso manoscritta poco leggibile in inchiostro bruno a c. B8v. Ex libris ‘Owen Gingerich’ incollato al contropiatto. Leggero alone di umidità al margine inferiore di poche carte. Bell’esemplare.

Rara. Importantissima opera che segnò rilevante progresso nella Trigonometria. Tomash & Williams: “In this volume Apian published a table of sines that, for the first time, was based on a circle with a radius of a power of ten, in this case one hundred thousand. The values of the functions were thus decimal and were easily adapted to any situation in which the defining circle was a decimal power”.
Questa è la seconda edizione dell'Instrumentum primi mobilis di Apiano, pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1534. Sebbene ridotto nelle dimensioni, il testo è sostanzialmente identico alla prima parte della prima edizione. Tuttavia, Apiano ha fornito una nuova prefazione e ha scelto di non includere il testo di astronomia di Gerardo Cremonense pubblicato con la prima edizione. La differenza più degna di nota è l'aggiunta di due nuove carte di testo (c4-d1) che descrivono una diversa forma di quadrante (mostrata sul frontespizio e di nuovo a carta d1 insieme ai diagrammi di supporto).
DSB: “Of greater scientific significance, however, is Apian's 'Instrumentum sinuum sive primi mobilis' (1534), where he calculates sines for every minute, with the radius divided decimally. These are the first such tables ever printed”.

Folio. 290x200 mm. Smooth vellum binding. Leaves [44]. Quire ‘d’ is bound between quire f and g. Title-page printed in red and black with woodcut illustrations, woodcut diagrams along the text, Italian and roman type. Unreadable handwritten note in brown ink on l. B8v. Ex Libris of Owen Gingerich glued on the inside cover. Slight traces of humidity on the lower margin of few leaves. Nice copy.

Very rare. Apianus' work marked a major advance in trigonometry. Tomash & Williams: “In this volume Apian published a table of sines that, for the first time, was based on a circle with a radius of a power of ten, in this case one hundred thousand. The values of the functions were thus decimal and were easily adapted to any situation in which the defining circle was a decimal power”.
This is the second edition of Apianus’s Instrumentum primi mobilis, first published in 1534. Although reduced in size, the text is essentially identical to the first portion of the first edition. However, Apianus has provided a new preface and has elected not to include the astronomy text of Gerardus Cremonensis issued with the first edition. The most noteworthy difference is the addition of two new leaves of text (c4-d1) describing a different form of quadrant (shown on the title page and again on leaf d1 together with supporting diagrams)
