Terrestrial and Celestial Globes, George III period.

Pair of mahogany table globes. Measurements: diameter approx. 30 cm; Height approx. 64 cm, including the stand. Composed of 12 colored paper spindles glued onto the rigid stand, with graduated brass meridian ring, applied paper horizons graduated in months of the year, houses of the Zodiac and compass points. The globes are supported by a mahogany structure, composed of three uprights that fit into the dial and converge in a turned element, resting on three feet. Globes show extensive wear, losses, damage and cracks. Legs with little repairs.
Two splendid globes produced in England in the early 19th century, with accurate representations of all the known lands, based on the new geographical discoveries following Cook's voyages and subsequent circumnavigations. In a circular cartouche, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the inscription “The New Twelve Inch British Terrestrial Globe, Representing the Accurate Positions of the Principal Known Places of the Earth from the discoveries of Captain Cook and subsequent Circumnavigators to the present period. 1802 W. & S. Jones Holborn London”; below the inscription “With Additions to 1807, 1814”.
Both globes made-up of twelve engraved hand-colored gores and two polar calottes, the terrestrial depicting geographical information, with graduated equator and ecliptic, the prime meridian through London, showing the tropics Cancer and Capricorn, the Arctic and Antartic Circles, and the tracks of Captain Cook's voyages; the celestial, with graduated equator, equinoctial colure and ecliptic, the latter graduated houses of the Zodiac, showing the tropics and northern and southern poles, the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and scientific instruments, the stars represented in seven orders of magnitude (with key), both spheres with graduated brass meridian rings, applied paper horizons graduated in months of the year, houses of the Zodiac and compass points, supported on mahogany supports to turned column and tripod leg base.
