Legatura coeva in marocchino rosso, cornici dorate ai piatti, al centro del piatto anteriore titolo in oro entro riquadro in marocchino verde, ornamenti in oro sul dorso liscio, tagli oro. Testo intramezzato alle Tavole, così composto: Pagine [6], 5, Carte [5], pagine [9], Carte [4], pagine [4], Carte [17], pagine [2], Carte [6]. 35 Tavole incise all’acquatinta con coloritura coeva a mano.

Rara Prima edizione, magnificamente figurata. Le grandiose e luminose vedute raffigurano immagini di paesaggi: vedute del Lago di Ginevra, la cascata di Pissevache, vedute di Sion, la Galerie des Glaciers, vari ponti, le Isole Borromee e l'Isola Bella sul Lago Maggiore, ecc. Le composizioni, sapientemente equilibrate, sono animate da personaggi in costume (paesani, pastori, cocchieri, viaggiatori, ecc.) e presentano panorami di natura selvaggia oltre a città e villaggi. 
L’opera descrive il viaggio dal Lago di Ginevra al Lago Maggiore ed è scritta dal cartografo e politico di Neuchâtel Jean Frédéric d'Ostervald (1773-1850) a partire da 35 superbe tavole all'acquatinta colorate basate su disegni dal vero di Gabriel Ludwig Lory (1763-1840), Gabriel Lory (1784-1846) e Maximilien de Meuron (1785-1868). L’opera è divisa in quattro parti: ‘tableau general du lac de Geneve (4 vedute); ‘tableau general du Valais’ (4 vedute); tableau general du Simplon (21 vedute); ‘tableau general du lac Majeur (6 vedute). Il testo è ricco di dettagli sulla storia, la geografia e i costumi delle regioni attraversate percorrendo la nuova via del Sempione, voluta da Napoleone per rafforzare la difesa dell'Italia settentrionale e aprire un passaggio alla sua artiglieria. È considerata la prima strada automobilistica delle Alpi. Delle 35 tavole, 20 sono dedicate a questa strada.

Folio. 375x265 mm. Contemporary red Morocco binding, gilt frames on covers, on the center of front cover gilt title within frame on green Morocco, gilt ornaments on smooth spine, gilt edges. Text interspersed with the plates, as follows: Pp. [6], 5, leaves [5], pages [9], leaves [4], pp. [4], Leaves [17], pages [2], leaves [6]. 35 aquatint engraved plates with contemporary hand coloring. 

Rare first edition, magnificently illustrated. The magnificent and luminous views depict landscapes: views of Lake Geneva, the Pissevache waterfall, views of Sion, the Galerie des Glaciers, various bridges, the Borromean Islands and Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore, etc. The expertly balanced compositions are animated by costumed figures (villagers, shepherds, coachmen, travelers, etc.) and present views of wild nature as well as cities and villages.
The work describes the journey from Lake Geneva to Lake Maggiore and was written by the Neuchâtel cartographer and politician Jean Frédéric d'Ostervald (1773-1850) from 35 superb colored aquatint plates based on life drawings by Gabriel Ludwig Lory (1763-1840), Gabriel Lory (1784-1846), and Maximilien de Meuron (1785-1868). The work is divided into four parts: 'General view of Lake Geneva' (4 views); 'General view of Valais' (4 views); 'General view of Simplon' (21 views); 'General view of Lake Majeur' (6 views). The text is rich in details on the history, geography, and customs of the regions crossed by the new Simplon road, commissioned by Napoleon to strengthen the defense of northern Italy and open a passage for his artillery. It is considered the first motorable road in the Alps. Of the 35 plates, 20 are dedicated to this road.
