1728-1743

PICART, Bernard - BERNARD, Jean Frederic - BRUZEN DE LA MARTINIERE, Antoine Augustin.

11 volumi in-folio. 395x245 mm.

PICART, Bernard - BERNARD, Jean Frederic - BRUZEN DE LA MARTINIERE, Antoine Augustin.

11 Folio volumes. 395x245 mm. Contemporary calf binding, adorned frame with fleurons on corners, spine with 6 nervs with gilt decorations and titles on red and green Morocco labels, red edges. Text on two volumes. Work consisting of 8 parts in 9 volumes and the Addition ‘Superstitions’, 4 parts in 2 volumes. In total a Frontispiece and 265 copper-engraved plates o.t. Some volumes with light browning, negligible damage to the spines of the bindings.

A monumental work, magnificently illustrated, complete with all parts, additions and plates. The Bernard-Picart collaboration was the most famous encyclopedic work on religion of the 18th century. It was later called the first global vision of religion. The work is famous for its beautiful engravings based on Picart's drawings. These engravings depict the rites of all the world's religions. Catholics, Dutch Reformed Protestants, Lutherans, Anglicans, Anabaptists, Quakers, Orthodox Christians, and Jews are depicted alongside Hindus, Mexicans, and Muslims. The scenes of exotic peoples are based on more or less imaginative travelogues, reproducing engravings by Jean de Léry, among others, but the descriptions of European religions have true documentary value. Places are described in detail. The highly detailed compositions, with numerous small figures, allow us to distinguish function and social rank based on clothing and headdresses.
Guttinger: “They present all religions on an equal footing, from the angle of a study of mores, and underline the relativity of beliefs. Scenes of torture denounce the horror of the Inquisition; endless Catholic processions, rites and dogmas are somewhat mocked: the work was put on the index, but this did not prevent it from being a success. In France, engraved plates were reissued, but without the subversive text. Three historians have emphasized how much this book ‘changed Europe’ (Lynn Hunt, Margaret C. Jacob et Wijnajnand Mijnhardt … 2010.) by this comparative and societal approach to religion heralding the Enlightenment”
