Folio; 325 x 230 mm. Legatura coeva in vitello bruno screziato, dorso dorato con nervi, ornamenti a scomparti bordi spruzzati. Antiporta incisa, frontespizio stampato in rosso e nero con grande incisione, armi incise a piena pagina del dedicatario Ferdinando IV. Pp. [32 nn. inclusa l’antiporta], pp. 618, [28]. Illustrato con 34 tavole incise per lo più a piena pagina, 215 illustrazioni xilografiche e molti esempi di musica. Lievi bruniture in alcuni punti, per il resto copia pulita in buono stato di conservazione.

Terza edizione ampliata e unica in folio. Merrill: “This third edition of Magnes, the finest and most complete of the three editions, was greatly enlarged by Kircher. It contains many observations and experiments not in the two previous editions” Un'opera veramente enciclopedica sul magnetismo ricca di teorie pseudo-scientifiche e fantastiche, applicate a ogni tipo di disciplina: cosmologia, astronomia, geografia, ottica, elettricità, medicina, metallurgia, musica, ecc. Il magnetismo e l'elettromagnetismo (termine coniato da Kircher in quest'opera) sono concepiti come una forza universale della natura. Caillet: “Le chapitre qui traite du magnétisme musicale est remarquable” Wheeler Gift: “Celebrated work. It deals with electrics as a magnetism, showing green versatility and encyclopaedic knowledge. He controverts Gilbert’s theories in magnetism and those of Kepler in astronomy”.

Condition Report

Folio; 325 x 230 mm. contemporary brown mottled calf binding, gilt spine with raised bands, tooled in compartments, sprinkled edges. Engraved frontispiece, title page printed in red and black with large engraving, full-page engraved arms of the dedicatee Ferdinand IV. Pp. [32 nn. incl. Frontispiece], pp. 618, [28]. Illustrated with 34 mostly full page engraved plates, 215 woodcut illustrations, and many examples of music. Slight browning in places, else a clean copy in good condition.
