Subscription of the chief medical officer of the Vessel le Montagnard certifying that citizen Martial Fontanud had his leg amputated, wounded in battle.
The signature is signed by Villaret, French count and admiral, captain general of Martinique and St. Lucia in 1802, on 10 Prairial year 2 of the Republic (1794).
Also on the Certificate are the signatures of the General Staff of the Republic ship Le Montagnard, made on board on 28 Prairial year 2 (May 17, 1794) while the ship was in the roadstead of Fort Bertheaume, in the department of Finistere.
“Certifions que le Citoyen Martial Fontanud, embarqué sur le dit vaisseau, s'est comporté en bon Républicain et a donné des preuves de son courage et de civisme, notamment au combat du 10 Prairial An 2, où il a eu la jambe gauche emportée par un boulet de canon. Souscription de l'Officier de santé en chef du Vaisseaux le Montagnard, qui certifie lui avoir coupé la jambe qui avait été brisé dans le combat”.
