Incisione su legno. 220x145 mm. Incollata su cartoncino di supporto. Bell’esemplare.

Splendida xilografia in tiratura del '700 raffigurante Cristo in croce con la Vergine e San Giovanni Evangelista.
In riferimento alla stampa originale del XVI secolo, British Museum: “Christ on the Cross with the Virgin and St John the Evangelist. […] Illustrations to Jean Gerson, 'Sermo de passione domini iuxta mentem evangelistarum ex vernaculo Gallico', Basel, Adam Petri: 1518. 1517 […] The Christ on the Cross first used in a Missal printed by J. Wolff in Basel the previous year (1517).”
Ambrosius Holbein, pittore e disegnatore di xilografie e incisioni su metallo. Augusta probabilmente 1494 - Basilea (?) 1519 (?). Figlio maggiore di Hans Holbein il Vecchio e fratello di Hans Holbein il Giovane, con il quale è ritratto nel disegno del padre "Ambrosius e Hans Holbein", datato 1511, a Berlino (Kupferstichkabinett). Nel 1515 è registrato a Basilea, dopo essere passato per Stein-am-Rhein, dove lavorò agli affreschi del monastero di San Giorgio. Nel 1517 fu ammesso alla corporazione dei pittori di Basilea, dove l'anno successivo ottenne la cittadinanza. La sua limitata opera è stata in passato in parte confusa con le prime opere del fratello, ma è sempre stato considerato un ritrattista e disegnatore di notevole sensibilità.

Woodcut. 220x145mm. Glued to a cardboard backing. A fine example.

Splendid 18th-century woodcut depicting Christ on the Cross with the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist.
Referring to the original 16th-century print, British Museum: “Christ on the Cross with the Virgin and St John the Evangelist. […] Illustrations to Jean Gerson, 'Sermo de passione domini iuxta mentem evangelistarum ex vernaculo Gallico', Basel, Adam Petri: 1518. 1517 […] The Christ on the Cross first used in a Missal printed by J. Wolff in Basel the previous year (1517).”
Ambrosius Holbein, painter and designer of woodcuts and metalcuts. Augsburg probably 1494-Basel(?)1519(?). The elder son of Hans Holbein the Elder and brother of Hans Holbein the Younger with whom he is portrayed in his father's drawing ‘Ambrosius and Hans Holbein’, dated 1511, in Berlin (Kupferstichkabinett). In 1515 he is recorded in Basel, after passing through Stein-am-Rhein where he worked on wall-paintings in the monastery of Saint George. In 1517 he was admitted to the painters' guild in Basel, where in the following year he became a citizen. His small oeuvre has in the past been partly confused with his brother's early work, but he has always been considered a portrait painter and draughtsman of considerable sensitivity.
