Annotazione di appartenenza manoscritta datata 1675 alla testa del capitolo di dedica. Iniziali e testatine xil. Alcuni fori di tarlo nel margine interno.

Rara prima edizione di questo resoconto delle missioni cattoliche in Thailandia, Cambogia e Vietnam. Nel 1658 Papa Alessandro VII inviò tre vescovi in Estremo Oriente per governare le Chiese di questi Paesi. Di questi tre vescovi Pallu, Lambert de la Motte e Cotolendi, solo due arrivarono a destinazione. Queste relazioni furono affidate ai padri delle Missioni Estere di Parigi, rivali dei Gesuiti.
Il libro è suddiviso in quattro parti dove in ognuna si tratta di un’area differente delle missioni: la prima concerne principalmente del Siam (Thailandia); la seconda si focalizza sulla Cocincina e sulle persecuzioni che subirono i cattolici in quell’epoca; la terza tratta della Cambogia e la quarta del regno di Tonchino.
"Nel frattempo i vescovi francesi in Oriente tenevano informato il pubblico sulle loro attività in Cina, Indocina e Siam attraverso una serie di relazioni pubblicate. Da queste opere risultava chiaro che la missione francese stava diventando sempre più dominante nell'Asia orientale e sudorientale" (Lach-Van Kley, 3, 416).

8vo; 185x120 mm. Contemporary full-leather binding, gilt titles and rules on spine with nerfs. Pp. [16], 367, [1]. Ex-Libris of Prince A. De Broglie pasted to the insidecover. Manuscript ownership annotation dated 1675 at the head of the dedication chapter. Woodcut Initials and headpieces. Some wormholes in the inner margin.

Rare first edition of this account of Catholic missions in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. In 1658 Pope Alexander VII sent three bishops to the Far East to govern the Churches in these countries. Of these three bishops Pallu, Lambert de la Motte and Cotolendi, only two reached their destination. These reports were entrusted to the fathers of the Foreign Missions in Paris, rivals of the Jesuits.
The book is divided into four parts where each deals with a different area of the missions: the first deals mainly with Siam (Thailand); the second focuses on Cocincina and the persecutions suffered by Catholics at that time; the third deals with Cambodia; and the fourth with the kingdom of Tonkin.
"Meanwhile, the French bishops in the East kept the public informed about their activities in China, Indochina and Siam through a series of published reports. It was clear from these works that the French mission was becoming increasingly dominant in East and Southeast Asia" (Lach-Van Kley, 3, 416).
