4to. 250x190 mm. Legatura coeva in cartonato ocra. Pagine [6, compresi Occhietto, Antiporta, Frontespizio], 6, [2], 60, [2]. Antiporta figurata incisa in rame. Finalino inciso in rame dal D’Agrain. Leggerissimo foxing. Buon esemplare intonso e ad ampi margini.

Rara edizione originale. Nel 1792 La Fayette si congedò dal comando della Guardia nazionale e, nell'agosto, le fazioni radicali giacobine ordinarono il suo arresto. In fuga attraverso i Paesi Bassi austriaci, il generale fu catturato dalle truppe austriache e trascorse più di cinque anni in carcere. La bella antiporta, con il generale che incontra nella cella la sua famiglia, è incisa da E. Henne su disegno dello stesso d’Agrain.

4to. 250x190 mm. Contemporary ochre cardboard binding. Pp. 6 (including halftitle, frontispiece and titlepage), 6, [2], 60, [2]. Engraved frontispiece and endpiece engraved by D’Agrain. Very slight foxing. Good uncut specimen with wide margins.

Rare first edition. In 1792 Lafayette resigned from command of the National Guard and, in August, radical Jacobin factions ordered his arrest. Fleeing through the Austrian Netherlands, the general was captured by Austrian troops and spent more than five years in prison. The beautiful frontispiece, with the general meeting his family in the cell, is engraved by E. Henne based on a drawing by d'Agrain himself.
