2 volumi in 4to. 252x190 mm. Legatura coeva piena pelle bruna, cornice di triplo filetto ai piatti, dorso con decorazioni, titolo e numero di volume in oro, tagli rossi. Pagine XV, inclusi Occhietto e Frontespizio, 1 bianca, 317-[1], Tavole fuori testo numerate 1-80; Pagine VIII, inclusi Occhietto e Frontespizio, 298, [8, Nome de Messieurs les Souscripteurs]. Tavole fuori testo numerate 81-140. In totale 140 Tavole incise fuori testo. Timbro a secco di collezionista sul Frontespizio “Antonio de Almeida Correa”. Alcune pagine con leggere bruniture e qualche macchietta. Buon esemplare.

Rara prima edizione, figurata. Celebre relazione che descrive i costumi, la religione, la scienza e le arti di indiani, cinesi e birmani (Pegouins). Il volume 1 era interamente dedicato all'India, mentre il volume 2 copriva l'Estremo Oriente, tra cui Cina, Birmania, Madagascar, Maldive, Mauritius, Ceylon (l'attuale Sri Lanka), Indonesia e Filippine. Il secondo volume contiene molti approfondimenti sulla storia naturale di questi paesi. Opera riccamente illustrata con tavole fuori testo, a volte su doppia pagina, incise a bulino da Poisson, Desmoulins, Jean-Jacques Avril, Claude Fessart e Milsan, basate su disegni di Pierre Sonnerat. 
Alcune delle tavole mostrano le usanze dei paesi visitati, con numerosi dettagli su professioni, feste e costumi della popolazione. 55 splendide tavole sono dedicate all'ornitologia, alla zoologia e alla botanica. Molte specie di uccelli sono rappresentate qui per la prima volta: "In effetti, per 70 anni il resoconto di Sonnerat è rimasto il contributo più importante all'ornitologia della Cina" (Streseman).
La tavola n. 1 è una mappa di Pondicherry, seguita da scene di vita quotidiana, mestieri, strumenti musicali, monete indiane e altro ancora. Il secondo volume contiene le splendide tavole botaniche e ornitologiche.

Two volumes in 4to. 252x190 mm. Contemporary full leather binding, frame with triple rules on covers, spine with gilt decorations, title and number, red edges. Pp. XV, including Halftitle and Titlepage, 1 blank leaf, 317-[1], plates out text 1-80; pp. VIII, including Halftitle and Titlepage, 298, [8, Nome de Messieurs les Souscripteurs]. Plates out text numbered 81-140. In total 140 engraved plates o.t. Dry stamp of previous owner on the titlepage “Antonio de Almeida Correa”. Some slight brownings and little stains. Good copy.

Rare first edition, illustrated. Famous report describing the customs, religion, science and arts of Indians, Chinese and Burmese (Pegouins). Volume 1 was entirely devoted to India, while Volume 2 covered the Far East, including China, Burma, Madagascar, the Maldives, Mauritius, Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka), Indonesia and the Philippines. The second volume contains many insights into the natural history of these countries. This work is richly illustrated with plates outside the text, sometimes double-page spreads, engraved by Poisson, Desmoulins, Jean-Jacques Avril, Claude Fessart and Milsan, based on drawings by Pierre Sonnerat. 
Some of the plates show the customs of the countries visited, with numerous details on the professions, festivals and customs of the population. 55 splendid plates are devoted to ornithology, zoology and botany. Many bird species are represented here for the first time: In effetti, per 70 anni il resoconto di Sonnerat è rimasto il contributo più importante all'ornitologia della Cina" (Streseman).
Plate 1 is a map of Pondicherry, followed by scenes of daily life, crafts, musical instruments, Indian coins and more. The second volume contains the splendid botanical and ornithological plates.
