In-4to. 225x162 mm. Legatura in piena pergamena, titolo su tassello in marocchino rosso e fregi in oro al dorso. Pagine [24, incluso Frontespizio], 338, [2]. Sul Frontespizio stemma del dedicatario, il Cardinale Francesco Barberini, affiancato da motti in greco. Nel testo illustrazioni xilografiche raffiguranti geroglifici e sigilli egiziani, caratteri copti e caratteri cinesi. Ex libris a stampa incollato sul contropiatto. Lieve foxing e alcune bruniture sui margini, bell’esemplare. 

Rara prima edizione. Prima grammatica copta stampata, uno studio pionieristico sul rapporto tra il copto e l'antico egiziano e altre lingue del Vicino Oriente. Il Prodromus esplora anche le possibili connessioni con altre lingue e manufatti, tra cui la misteriosa Tavola di Bembine e la recente scoperta della Stele di Xi'an, un'iscrizione dell'epoca Tang in cinese e siriaco vista per la prima volta dai gesuiti nel 1625. L’intuzione di Kircher contribuì a ispirare la decifrazione della Stele di Rosetta da parte di Jean-Francois Champollion. Kircher aveva ricevuto diversi manoscritti copti dall'amico Nicolas Claude Fabri de Peiresc, e in seguito acquisì un vocabolario arabo-copto portato dall'Egitto da Pietro della Valle. Merrill: “On the basis of these, and with Peiresc's encouragement, Kircher compiled the Prodromus. As the title reveals, it was to be a precursor of a later work on the Egyptian language, perhaps the Lingua aegyptiaca restituta ... Because 'things Egyptian' were the rage in seventeenth-century Europe, the Prodromus attained immediate popularity and firmly established Kircher's reputation as a scholar”.

In-4to. 225 x 162 mm. Full vellum binding, title on a red morocco label and gilt ornaments on the spine. Pages [24, including title page], 338, [2]. On the title page, the coat of arms of the dedicatee, Cardinal Francesco Barberini, flanked by mottos in Greek. The text features woodcut illustrations depicting Egyptian hieroglyphics and seals, Coptic characters, and Chinese characters. Printed bookplate glued to the insidecover. Slight foxing and some browning in the margins, a fine copy.

Rare first edition. The first printed Coptic grammar, a pioneering study of the relationship between Coptic and Ancient Egyptian and other Near Eastern languages. The Prodromus also explores possible connections with other languages ??and artifacts, including the mysterious Bembine Tablet and the recent discovery of the Xi'an Stele, a Tang-era inscription in Chinese and Syriac first seen by the Jesuits in 1625. Kircher's insight helped inspire Jean-François Champollion's decipherment of the Rosetta Stone. Kircher had received several Coptic manuscripts from his friend Nicolas Claude Fabri de Peiresc, and later acquired an Arabic-Coptic dictionary brought from Egypt by Pietro della Valle.
