GAMELIN, Jacques. Three plates from the "Nouveau Recueil d'Ostéologie et de Myologie".
Toulouse, Imprimerie de J. F. Desclassan, MDCCLXXIX [1779]
Three copperplate engravings; engraved from two sheets of approximately 532 x 385 mm and engraved from one sheet measuring 265 x 140 mm. Large sheets with margins as original. The smaller plate is inserted into the text and trimmed, but still has wide margins. Repaired tear in the lower white margin of the frontispiece plate; a good copy.
Elegant plates depicting the title page, the frontispiece, and an anatomical plate from "Nouveau Recueil d'Ostéologie et de Myologie, dessiné d'après nature par Jacques Gamelin de Carcassonne, Professeur de Peinture, de l'Académie de Saint-Luc de Rome, pour l'utilité des sciences et des arts...", a captivating illustrated work that saw only one edition, renowned for its author's talent and imagination.
To create his work dedicated to osteology and myology, Gamelin set up a dissection laboratory in Toulouse, where he drew and engraved his fantastical anatomical compositions himself with the help of two of his best students, Martin and Lavallée.
