In-folio grande. 340x235 mm. Legatura in pergamena rigida, titolo manoscritto e decorazioni sul dorso. Pagine [28], 896, [4]. Marca tipografica sul Frontespizio, ripetuta sul verso dell’ultima carta, Iniziali istoriate in diverse dimensioni, carattere Italico, Romano e Greco. 509 xilografie a piena pagina, 3 più piccole nel testo, ritratto dell'autore al verso del frontespizio e tre ritratti dei disegnatori Albrecht Meyer e Heinrich Fullmaurer e dell'incisore Veit Rudolph Speckle al recto della carta 3f5r. Velatura di umidità nel margine inferiore di alcuni fogli con restauri sui primi fogli, talvolta margini rifilati, in complesso buon esemplare. 

Rarissima prima edizione, opera magnificamente figurata. Il più famoso e bel trattato di botanica del Rinascimento. PMM: “the most celebrated and most beautiful herbal ever published.” Quest’opera rappresentò una rivoluzione nella botanica, al pari di quelle operate negli stessi anni da Copernico nell’astronomia e da Vesalio nell’anatomia. Fuchs descrive dettagliatamente oltre 400 piante, elencate in ordine alfabetico, indicandone nome, forma, luogo, tempo, odore, temperamento e virtù. Si basa sulle tre principali fonti antiche: Dioscoride, Galeno e Plinio. 
Più di un quarto delle specie descritte non è originario dell'Europa, comprese le importazioni dall'Asia. Compare qui per la prima volta la descrizione di alcune piante americane come il mais, il cactus, la zucca, il fagiolo rosso, il peperoncino, la calendula, il tabacco e anche la fucsia, che deve il suo nome all'autore. Le illustrazioni sono molto accurate e mostrano non solo foglie e fiori, ma anche apparati radicali e, talvolta, specifici dettagli delle piante raffigurate.

Large folio. 340x235 mm. Stiff vellum, handwritten title on spine, renewed endpapers. Pages [28], 896, [4]. Collation: a6 and ß8, A-Z6, a-z6, aa-zz6, aaa-fff6. Printer’s device on the title page, repeated on the verso of the last leaf, historiated initials in several sizes, Italic, Roman and Greek type. 509 full-page woodcuts, 3 smaller ones in the text, portrait of the author on the title page verso and three portraits of the illustrators Albrecht Meyer and Heinrich Fullmaurer and the engraver Veit Rudolph Speckle on the recto of leaf 3f5r. Humidity haze in the lower margin of some sheets with restorations on the first sheets, sometimes trimmed edges, overall a good copy.

Extremely rare first edition, magnificently illustrated work. The most famous and beautiful treatise on botany of the Renaissance. PMM: ‘the most celebrated and most beautiful herbal ever published.’ This work represented a revolution in botany, on a par with those brought about in the same years by Copernicus in astronomy and Vesalius in anatomy. Fuchs describes in detail over 400 plants, listed in alphabetical order, indicating their name, shape, location, time, smell, temperament and virtues. It is based on the three main ancient sources: Dioscorides, Galen and Pliny. 
More than a quarter of the species described are not native to Europe, including imports from Asia. This is the first appearance of descriptions of certain American plants such as corn, cactus, pumpkin, red beans, chilli peppers, marigolds, tobacco and even fuchsia, which owes its name to the author. 
The illustrations are very accurate and show not only leaves and flowers, but also root systems and, in some cases, specific details of the plants depicted.
