Società Rivet di Marsiglia. Carteggio di 50 Lettere tra Francia e Sudamerica.
Aprile 1844 – Luglio 1846

Importantissima documentazione di prima mano sul commercio marittimo tra Francia e Sud America. Le merci importate in Francia sono: rame, cuoio, cotone e salnitro. Le lettere riguardano principalmente la nave ‘Le Rhone’ della Società Rivet di Marsiglia. Le Rhone, al comando del Capitano F. Sammel, attraverso l’Oceano e giunge in Cile e in Perù, attraccando nei porti di Lima, Callao, Valparaiso. Sono indicate le le merci portate dalla Francia (Lettera da Lima 4 Dicembre 1844 ): Olio d’oliva, Vino di Bordeaux, Acqua di Lavanda, Vino di Madera, Olio lampante. Sotto le merci cilene da caricare con quantità e relativi prezzi : rame in barre, china, cotone, cuoio, rame del Cile. Si riportano i prezzi del Nitrato. In fondo alla seconda pagina del 4 Dicembre l’itinerario che la nave dovrà seguire con i porti del Cile ove caricare le diverse merci.
Interessanti notizie sulla traversata oceanica (13 Settembre): Le Rhone giunge a Valparaiso dopo un lungo viaggio di 38 giorni avendo rotto l’albero di trinchetto e l’albero maestro, il Capitano Sammel fa sbarcare una parte di Salnitro perchè la nave era troppo carica. Dettagliato resoconto della controversia sorta con il Capitano (15/16 Settembre 1845).
Alcune lettere sono indirizzate o provengono dalla Società Huth, Gruning & Co. La società Huth & Co. di Londra, fondata nella capitale inglese nel 1809, aprì successivamente filiali in Cile e Perù a metà degli anni '20 dell'Ottocento, in seguito denominate Huth, Gruning & Co.  L'impresa divenne rapidamente importante per il commercio mondiale e permise di intraprendere in breve tempo una vera e propria attività bancaria, grazie ai grandi proventi dell'attività commerciale.

Rivet Company of Marseille. Correspondence of 50 Letters between France and South America.
April 1844 - July 1846

Very important firsthand documentation on maritime trade between France and South America. The goods imported into France were: copper, leather, cotton, and saltpeter. The letters primarily concern the ship "Le Rhone," owned by the Rivet Company of Marseille. The Rhone, under the command of Captain F. Sammel, crossed the ocean and reached Chile and Peru, docking in the ports of Lima, Callao, and Valparaiso. The goods imported from France are listed (Letter from Lima, December 4, 1844): olive oil, Bordeaux wine, lavender water, Madeira wine, and lamp oil. Below are the Chilean goods to be loaded, along with quantities and prices: copper bars, cinchona, cotton, leather, and Chilean copper. The prices of saltpeter are also listed. At the bottom of the second page of December 4th is the itinerary the ship will follow, including the Chilean ports where it will load its various cargoes.
Interesting information about the ocean crossing (September 13th): The Rhone arrives in Valparaiso after a long 38-day voyage, having broken its foremast and mainmast. Captain Sammel unloads some of the saltpeter because the ship was overladen. A detailed account of the dispute with the Captain (September 15-16, 1845).
Some letters are addressed to or originate from the firm Huth, Gruning & Co. The London firm Huth & Co., founded in London in 1809, subsequently opened branches in Chile and Peru in the mid-1820s, later renamed Huth, Gruning & Co. The company quickly became important for world trade and quickly established a full-fledged banking business, thanks to the large profits from its trading activities.
