In-4to di mm. 280 x 220. Cartonatura d'epoca alla rustica. Pp. VII, [1], 343, [1] con 31 tavv. in rame f.t. incise da Wandelaar e una vignetta al frontespizio.  Ex libris incollato al primo contropiatto. Lievi bruniture, ma buon es. a pieni margini intonsi. 

Edizione originale di quest’opera ancora giovanile del grande naturalista ginevrino, in cui vennero condensate le osservazioni dell’autore sulla nutrizione delle piante, sulla loro crescita, sulla funzione delle foglie ed il loro comportamento rispetto alla luce, all’umidità etc.  Nel corso dello studio, effettuato in gran parte per mezzo dell’analisi microscopica, il Bonnet danneggiò irreparabilmente la sua vista.  "Il s’occupa de rechercher comment les plantes se nourrissent.  Il fit des expériences sur l’usage des feuilles, des quelles il resulta des faits extrêmement curieux et entièrement neufs".

4to, 266 x 204 mm. Contemporary sewing binding. Pp. VIII, 343. engraved title vignette and 31 folded engraved plates by Van der Schley and Wandelaar. Spine with six raised bands. Rich gilt compartments and brown morocco label with gilt title. Boards with gilt borders, front board with gilt armorial vignette. Later blank endpapers. All edges red. Without the usual browning or foxing and a copy with large margins. Board edges rubbed, rebacked with the old spine laid down and the endpapers replaced, small former owner's inscription on the titlepage. Otherwise a very good, clean copy.

This work marks the beginning of the research of photosynthesis, the basis of the most important metabolistic process on earth. DSB: "For his masterly experimentation Bonnet should be considered one of the first naturalists to investigate experimentally the question of photosynthesis".
