In folio; 315x210 mm. Pergamena rigida del XVIII sec. con titolo su tassello in oro al dorso. 8 Carte non numerate, pp. 654, 1 carta n.n. (Colophon). Frontespizio entro fregio architettonico con putti e decori in pieno stile rinascimentale, inciso finemente in rame; moltissime figure nel testo (diagrammi astronomici e tabelle) e capolettera istoriati entro vignette, il tutto in xilografia; bella marca editoriale al colophon. Bell’esemplare che presenta qualche alone alla fine del tomo all’angolo inferiore, alcune macchie e lievi fioriture.

Prima edizione di questa celebre opera, “Summa” della gnomonica rinascimentale, che fu scritta per mano del noto gesuita Cristoforo Clavio. In questa opera “l'Euclide del XVI secolo”, così fu etichettato il Clavio, raccoglie tutto il sapere della gnomonica basata sugli studi geometrici. L’autore risiedette a lungo a Roma, dove redasse molte opere di carattere scientifico - astronomico; fu professore di matematica, nel Sacro Collegio Romano; collaborò alla riforma Gregoriana del calendario. Nel 1611 Galileo si rivolse a lui per superare le diffidenze contro le sue scoperte astronomiche, ma Clavio non si pronunziò.

In folio; 315 x 210 mm. 18th-century stiff vellum with a gilt title on the spine. 8 leaves, 654 pages, 1 leaf unnumbered (Colophon). Title page within an architectural border with cherubs and decorations in full Renaissance style, finely engraved in copper; numerous illustrations in the text (astronomical diagrams and tables) and historiated initials within vignettes, all woodcut engravings; beautiful printer’s device on the colophon. A fine copy with some staining at the bottom corner of the volume, some stains, and light foxing.

The first edition of this famous work, the "Summa" of Renaissance gnomonics, was written by the renowned Jesuit Christopher Clavius. In this work, "the Euclid of the sixteenth century," as Clavius was tagged, he gathered all the knowledge of gnomonics based on geometric studies. The author lived for a long time in Rome, where he wrote many scientific and astronomical works; he was a professor of mathematics at the Sacred Roman College; and he collaborated on the Gregorian calendar reform. In 1611, Galileo turned to him to overcome the mistrust surrounding his astronomical discoveries, but Clavius remained silent.
