Seconda edizione ampliata, magnificamente figurata di questa enciclopedia dedicata all'ottica in tutti i suoi aspetti. L’opera tratta estesamente della luce, dell’astronomia e dei fenomeni ottici, con ampi approfondimenti su diversi argomenti correlati, tra cui le prime descrizioni della camera oscura, della lanterna magica (con due incisioni su rame alle pagine 768 e 769), della bioluminescenza e della fosforescenza, nonché discussioni su meridiane, macchine volanti e osservazioni astronomiche tramite telescopio.
Merill: “Before writing this book, Kircher had read Kepler's Ad Vitellionem paralipomena (1604), the first modern work on optics”.
L'Antiporta allegorica è incisa da Pierre Miotte; il ritratto, inciso da Hendrick Bary, raffigura il conte Johann Friedrich von Waldstein, al quale Kircher dedicò questo libro. In fine la grandissima tavola ripiegata che raffigura l’Oroscopo Universale della Compagnia di Gesù, creato e disegnato dallo stesso Kircher.

Legatura del XVIII secolo in piena pelle, dorso a sei nervi, fogli di guardia marmorizzati, tagli rossi. 34 carte non numerate [compresi Antiporta, Frontespizio e Ritratto], pagine 810 [i.e. 710], 5 carte non numerate, verso ultima carta bianca. Errori di numerazione: la paginazione salta da 424 a 525 senza perdita di testo. Testo in latino su due colonne. Numerose illustrazioni xilografiche e incisioni su rame nel testo di diverse dimensioni, molte a piena pagina. Tavole incise in rame fuori testo: Antiporta allegorica, Ritratto di Jean Frederico Conte di Waldstein, 2 tabelle a piena pagina recto e verso su unico foglio dopo pagina 292, una Tavola con quattro Costellazioni dopo pagina 422, una grande tavola ripiegata ‘Oroscopium Catholicum’ dopo pagina 414.
Ex libris araldico di Joseph-Gaspar de Servais, con il motto «Bien faire et ne rien craindre» incollato al contropiatto. Restauro al margine superiore di pagina 180, usuali bruniture per la qualità della carta, più forti in alcune pagine, macchiette e foxing. Esemplare completo con la grande tavola ripiegata ‘Horoscopium Catholicum’, spesso mancante.

Magnificently illustrated, enlarged second edition of this encyclopaedia devoted to optics in all its aspects. The work deals extensively with light, astronomy and optical phenomena, with extensive coverage of various related topics, including early descriptions of the camera obscura, the magic lantern (with two copper engravings on pages 768 and 769), bioluminescence and phosphorescence, as well as discussions of sundials, flying machines and astronomical observations through the telescope.
Merill: ‘Before writing this book, Kircher had read Kepler's Ad Vitellionem paralipomena (1604), the first modern work on optics.’ The allegorical frontispiece is engraved by Pierre Miotte; the portrait, engraved by Hendrick Bary, depicts Count Johann Friedrich von Waldstein, to whom Kircher dedicated this book. At the end is a large folded plate depicting the Universal Horoscope of the Society of Jesus, created and designed by Kircher himself.

Folio. 373 x 240 mm. 18th-century full-leather binding, six-raised spine, marbled flyleaves, red edges. 34 unnumbered leaves [including Frontispiece, Title Page, and Portrait], 810 pages [i.e. 710], 5 unnumbered leaves, blank verso last leaf. Numbering errors: pagination skips from 424 to 525 without loss of text. Latin text in two columns. Numerous woodcut illustrations and copperplate engravings in the text of various sizes, many full-page. Copperplate engravings outside the text: Allegorical frontispiece, Portrait of Jean Frederico, Count of Waldstein, two full-page tables, recto and verso on a single leaf after page 292, a plate with four constellations after page 422, a large folded plate 'Oroscopium Catholicum' after page 414. Heraldic bookplate by Joseph-Gaspar de Servais, with the motto "Bien faire et ne rien craindre" glued to the pastedown. Restoration to the top margin of page 180, spread usual browning due to the quality of paper, stronger in some pages, little stains and foxing. Complete copy with the large folded plate 'Horoscopium Catholicum', often missing.
