Rara edizione magnificamente figurata.

Robert J. Schiller: “This book works so well because the Tafereel is not just about the eighteenth century; it is also a mirror of other times, other public hysterias, and other speculative bubbles - even of our recent financial crises and the kinds of speculative folly that led to the financial crises of recent years”.

Harvard Library: “Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid references Tulipmania in the Dutch Republic, where the prices of tulip bulbs spiked and abruptly plummeted in 1637; the South Sea Bubble in England and Mississippi Bubble in France that burst in 1720; and other British, French, and Dutch enterprises that failed in 1720. Investing frenzy is characterized as a form of contagion moving from one country to the next: a consequence of the craze for international emulation as was evident in the English, for example, adopting the measures of John Law’s Mississippi Company that ultimately resulted in the South Sea Bubble. [65] Prints in the volume commonly depict the dreams, disordered states of mind, and moral failures of investors caught up in the speculative zeal—alluding to herd behavior, gambling, corruption, insanity, immorality, and demonic possession.”

A rare, magnificently illustrated edition. Published in Amsterdam, *Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid* ‘The Great Picture or Scene of Folly’ is a curious work consisting of a striking series of paintings and biting caricatures directed against Law and his financial system, presented through a series of large engravings with accompanying text satirising the mass hysteria, greed, credulity and deception that characterise stock market bubbles.

The volume includes pamphlets, legal documents, economic analyses, maps, satirical plays, poems, playing cards and over seventy prints. The Tafereel presents a multitude of Dutch texts and prints published on the theme of economic bubbles and speculative mania, primarily for satirical purposes. The stated aim of the book, as indicated on the title page, was to convey a ‘warning to future generations’, although naturally it was more generally an ironic jab at speculative bubbles and get-rich-quick schemes, which were a persistent and prominent feature of Dutch life at the time.
