Importante lavoro sulla craniologia, che introduce l'angolo facciale o "angolo del Camper”, teoria che diede una enorme fama al medico olandese. La misurazione dell'angolo facciale è una delle prime misurazioni fatte in antropologia fisica. Dalle misurazioni emergeva che gli europei avevano un angolo di 90°, gli "Orientali" 80°, Negri 70° e oranghi 58°. Egli notò che gli africani erano i più lontani dagli ideali classici di bellezza, ma si credeva che tutte le razze si fossero evolute da un antenato comune e Camper fu sempre contrario alla schiavitù. Solo in seguito i suoi risultati furono sfruttati da scienziati apertamente razzisti. Camper ha sviluppato e discusso il suo metodo di misurazione del viso nel 1760 e 1770, ma ciò non formalmente pubblicato fino alla pubblicazione del Verhandeling e la sua traduzione in francese nel 1791, presumibilmente pubblicato nello stesso anno dell’edizione olandese dallo stesso editore.  L’opera fu pubblicata postuma dal figlio dell'autore Adrian Gilles Camper.

4to, 265x225 mm; legatura in cartonato. Pp. VIII, 114, [2]. 10 carte di tavola incise in rame f.t. e ripiegate alla fine del volume. Strappetto alla prima pagina, prima dell’occhietto. Internamente ottimo stato di conservazione ad ampi margini e in barbe.

Important work on craniology, which introduces the facial angle or "corner of Camper", a theory that gave to the Dutch doctor an enormous fame. The measurement of the facial angle is one of the first measurements made in physical anthropology. He noticed that the Europeans had an angle of 90°, the "Orientals" 80°, Negrioes 70° and orangutans 58°. He noticed that the Africans were the furthest away from the classical ideals of beauty, but it was believed that all races had evolved from a common ancestor and Camper was always opposed to slavery, and later his results were exploited by openly racist scientists. Camper developed and discussed his facial measurement methodology in 1760 and 1770, but this was not formally published until the Verhandeling's publication and its translation into French in 1791, presumably published in the same year as the Dutch edition by the publisher himself. The work was published posthumously by the son of the author Adrian Gilles Camper.

4to, 265x225 mm; binding on boards. Pp. VIII, 114, [2]. 10 folded plates engraved on copper at the end of volume. Very good condition and specimen with wide margins and uncut.
