Seconda edizione di Amsterdam. Uno dei resoconti più riccamente illustrati di un viaggio in Russia, Persia e paesi e territori adiacenti dell'artista e viaggiatore olandese Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726/27). De Bruyn salpò per Archangel nel 1701, proseguendo per Mosca, dove rimase per oltre un anno. Nel 1703 lasciò Mosca, viaggiando attraverso l'Asia Minore (Turchia) verso la Persia, dove rimase fino al 1705. Dopo quasi un anno a Isfahan, si diresse verso Persepoli, l'antico complesso del palazzo achemenide, le cui rovine avevano il suo particolare interesse. Vi trascorse tre mesi, disegnando con cura le rovine del palazzo, i restanti rilievi e le iscrizioni cuneiformi. I suoi disegni di queste rovine sono le prime immagini affidabili di questo palazzo rese accessibili agli studiosi occidentali. Lasciando la Persia nel 1705 si recò in India, Ceylon e nelle Indie Orientali. Tornò più o meno per lo stesso percorso, risiedendo in Persia nel 1706 e nel 1707, visitando, tra l'altro, le rovine di Pasaragdes. L’apparato iconografico comprende due grandi vedute ripiegate, Mosca e Isfahan (194x40,5 cm.), ritratti di Samoiedi, oltre a molte illustrazioni di flora e fauna locali. Le due carte geografiche su doppia pagina, poste prima del testo, sono: ‘Nette koerswysing van Amsterdam naer Moskow en Astrakan ...’; ‘De nette koers wysing van de reis van Gamron na Batavia en wederom van Batavia na Gamron’.

In folio. 325x205 mm. Legatura coeva in pelle marrone scuro, titolo e fregi in oro sul dorso a nervi. Antiporta, Frontespizio in rosso e nero, Ritratto, Pagine [6], 472, [12]. Testo su 2 colonne. 2 mappe incise su doppia pagina, tavole fuori testo con 260 illustrazioni incise numerate di diverse dimensioni, alcune riunite in una pagina, molte a pagina intera o su doppia pagina, alcune più volte ripiegate, e 36 incisioni nel testo. Difetti alla legatura, alcuni strappi sui margini, occasionali macchie o leggera ingiallitura.

Second Amsterdam Edition. One of the most richly illustrated accounts of a journey to Russia, Persia and adjacent countries and territories by the Dutch artist and traveler Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726/27). De Bruyn sailed for Archangel in 1701, continuing on to Moscow, where he remained for over a year. In 1703 he left Moscow, traveling through Asia Minor (Turkey) to Persia, where he remained until 1705. After nearly a year in Isfahan, he made his way to Persepolis, the ancient Achaemenid palace complex, the ruins of which had its he particular interest. He spent three months there, carefully drawing the ruins of the palace, the remaining reliefs and the cuneiform inscriptions. His drawings of these ruins are the first reliable images of this palace made accessible to Western scholars. Leaving Persia in 1705 he went to India, Ceylon and the East Indies. He returned by much the same route, residing in Persia in 1706 and 1707, visiting, among other things, the ruins of Pasaragdes. The illustrations include two large folded views, Moscow and Isfahan (194x40.5 cm.), portraits of Samoyeds, as well as many illustrations of local flora and fauna. The two geographical maps, placed before the text, are: ‘Nette koerswysing van Amsterdam naer Moskow en Astrakan ...’; ‘De nette koers wysing van de reis van Gamron na Batavia en wederom van Batavia na Gamron’.

Text in 2 columns. 2 maps engraved on double page, plates outside the text with 260 numbered engraved illustrations of various sizes, some grouped on a single page, many on a full page or double page, some folded several times, and 36 engravings in the text. Binding defects, some folds partly split in fold. Views, some tears in the margins, occasional spotting or slight toning.
