GRAPALDI, Francesco Mario. De partibus aedium cum additamentis …
Parma, Francesco Ugoleto, 1506
A rare edition from Parma. An important Renaissance treatise on domestic architecture: it provides guidance on how the ideal home should be built, including ancillary features such as gardens, entrances, courtyards, plants, aviaries, granaries, armouries, and the furnishings of libraries, kitchens (‘vinaria cella’), bathrooms, spas, bedrooms, etc.
Interesting details on furnishings, crafts, and examples of daily life: how to bind books, how to store and serve wines, cheese-making, certain types of clocks, the arrangement of rooms in relation to light, how to light a fire in the kitchen, etc. Terms from Parma are often rendered in Latin, and there are personal references to his private life. This edition includes a comprehensive index of the terms and subjects mentioned.
