Prima edizione magnificamente illustrata. L’opera, dedicata all’architetto inglese Robert Adam, rappresenta una delle più emozionanti immagini della Roma tardo Barocca. Imponente opera di ricostruzione archeologica in cui il Campo Marzio della Roma Imperiale viene indagato attraverso le rovine, gli scavi e le ricerche effettuati tra il 1750 e il 1760 da Giovanni Battista Piranesi e dallo stesso Robert Adam.
Il secondo Frontespizio è una splendida veduta a volo d’uccello della Roma antica, le incisioni 5-10 sono in un’unica tavola più volte ripiegata e formano la grande veduta d’insieme del Campus Martius, la tavola numero 31, anch’essa ripiegata, incisa da Arnold Westerhout su disegno di Francesco Fontana, illustra la traslazione dell’obelisco del 1705.

Legatura piena bazzana marrone chiaro marmorizzato, cornice ornata in oro ai piatti, titolo in oro su tasselli e fregi in oro sui dorsi, fogli di guardia marmorizzati policromi. Al centro del piatto anteriore monogramma monogramma in oro con lettera P sormontata da corona. Esemplare impresso su carta forte vergellata con filigrana Ffiore di giglio in doppio cerchio", visibile su molti fogli. 
Così composto:
Vol. I: 2 frontespizi figurati incisi all'acquaforte in latino e italiano, Pagine 8 non numerate con Dedica, 70, XII, XVIII. Testo in latino e italiano. Tavola I “Topographia Campi Martii”.
Vol. II: 47 tavole numerate in numeri romani II-XLVIII, la Tav. V in 6 lastre numerate V-X (Ichnographiam Campi Martii...), la Tav. XXXI su 3 fogli (Veduta del castello con il quale fu alzata...la colonna Antonina).
Il monogramma sul piatto anteriore identifica William John Arthur Charles James Cavendish-Bentinck, VI duca di Portland (Dunkeld, Scozia, 1857 - Welbeck Abbey, 1943), il cui ex-libris araldico è incollato nel contropiatto. La “P” sta per Ducato di Portland, titolo creato nel 1716. Sui contropiatti è incollato anche l’ex-libris di Charles Filippi.
In totale, 2 Frontespizi figurati e 48 Tavole, tutto inciso in rame.
Lievi tracce d’uso alle legature, splendido esemplare su carta forte vergellata con filigrana.

Magnificently illustrated first edition. This work, dedicated to the English architect Robert Adam, represents one of the most moving images of late Baroque Rome. This impressive archaeological reconstruction explores the Campus Martius of Imperial Rome through the ruins, excavations, and research conducted between 1750 and 1760 by Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Robert Adam himself.
The second titlepage is a splendid bird's-eye view of ancient Rome; engravings 5–10 joined in a single plate, folded several times, forming a large overall view of the Campus Martius. Plate 31, also folded, engraved by Arnold Westerhout based on a drawing by Francesco Fontana, shows the translation of the obelisk of 1705.

2 folio volumes. 540 x 405 mm. Full marbled leather binding, gilt-decorated frame on the covers, gilt title on labels and gilt decorations on the spines, polychrome marbled endpapers. A gilt monogram with the letter P surmounted by a crown is featured in the center of the front cover. This copy is printed on laid thick paper with a “Fleurs-de-lys in double circle”, visible on many leaves.
Composed as follows:
Vol. I: 2 illustrated etched title pages in Latin and Italian, 8 unnumbered pages with dedication, 70, XII, XVIII. Text in Latin and Italian. Plate I “Topographia Campi Martii”. 
Vol. II: 48 plates numbered in Roman numerals II-XLVIII, Plate V on 6 plates numbered V-X (Ichnographiam Campi Martii...), Plate XXXI on 3 leaves (View of the castle with which the Antonine Column was erected...).
The monogram on the front cover identifies William John Arthur Charles James Cavendish-Bentinck, 6th Duke of Portland (Dunkeld, Scotland, 1857 - Welbeck Abbey, 1943), whose heraldic bookplate is pasted to the inside cover. The "P" stands for the Dukedom of Portland, a title created in 1716. 
Charles Filippi's bookplate is also pasted to the inside cover.
In total, 2 illustrated Titlepages and 48 plates, all engraved in copper.
Slight traces of wear on the bindings, a splendid copy on laid thick paper with watermark.
