Ignác Batthyány (1741-98), Bishop of Transylvania and founder of the Batthyaneum Library in Gyulafehérvár (Alba Iulia) and the observatory, was a staunch opponent of the ecclesiastical reforms under Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor.
