RUSIO, Lorenzo. Hippiatria sive Marescalia …
Paris, Christian Wechel, 1532
A rare and valuable edition. A highly significant work on equine diseases and bridles. This is Wechel’s second edition; the first, dated October 1531, was printed in elegant Aldine Roman type. The illustrations are by or attributed to Hans Sebald Beham: a horse on the title page, two horses on the verso of folio [*]4, and 43 woodcut illustrations in the text depicting various types of bridles.
Fra’ Lorenzo Rusio, Latinised as Laurentius Rusius (Rome, 1288 – 1347), was an Italian veterinarian, treatise writer, friar and farrier. He dedicated this work of his, on equine veterinary medicine, written around 1340, to his patron, Cardinal Napoleone Orsini (1263–1342), in whose service he was in Avignon.
The 19th-century veterinarian Pedro Darder states that “quasi tutta l'arte chirurgica moderna si incontra in germe nel suo libro”.
