Rara edizione, ampliata con 109 carte geografiche. Opera magistralmente incisa da Philip Galle. Contiene una tavola allegorica e 109 carte geografiche. 
Fu Philippe Galle, autore della prefazione, a realizzare questa riduzione del celebre “Theatrum orbis terrarum” di Ortelius, il libro più costoso del XVI secolo. Questa versione "tascabile" dell'atlante di Ortelius, era utilizzata da viaggiatori e studenti per i quali il folio sarebbe stato scomodo o costoso. L'atlante include la famosa mappa del mondo di Ortelius: "Typus Orbis Terrarum" (p. 1) e la sua mappa delle Americhe "Americae Sive Novi Orbis, Nova Descriptio".
Tooley: “The publication of [the first edition] of this atlas marked an epoch in the history of cartography. It was the first uniformly sized, systematic collection of maps of the countries of the world based only on contemporary knowledge and in that sense may be called the first modern atlas”.

Ottavo oblungo. 122x165 mm. Legatura dell’inizio del XVII secolo, in marocchino bruno, piatti con doppia cornice dorata, al centro un cartiglio ovale dorato con una composizione allegorica, doppia cornice dorata che incornicia i piatti, dorso con nervature in rilievo decorate con doppie D intrecciate, tagli dorati. Carte [8], 109, [2]. Tavola allegorica e 109 carte geografiche. Manca l'ultimo foglio bianco. Sotto il titolo i dati tipografici “Antverpiæ, Philippo Gallæo execudebat Arnoldus Coninx”. Esemplare completamente rigato (o filettato). Ex-libris Jacques Teutsch incollato al contropiatto. Il frontespizio e l'ultimo indice sono controfondati. Lievi tracce di usura alla legatura, dorso del XIX secolo, minuscola lacuna nel margine inferiore del foglio 24 e un piccolo forellino nel margine esterno del foglio 16.

Rare edition, enlarged with 109 maps. Masterfully engraved by Philip Galle. Contains an allegorical plate and 109 maps.
Philippe Galle, author of the preface, created this abridgement of Ortelius's celebrated "Theatrum orbis terrarum," the most expensive book of the 16th century. This "pocket-sized" version of Ortelius's atlas was used by travelers and students for whom folios would have been inconvenient or expensive. The atlas includes Ortelius's famous world map, "Typus Orbis Terrarum" (p. 1), and his map of the Americas, "Americae Sive Novi Orbis, Nova Descriptio."

Oblong 8vo. 122x165 mm. Brown leather binding of the beginning of 17th century, covers with double gilt frame; in the middle a gilt oval cartouche with allegorical composition, double gilt frame framing on covers, ribbed spine with intertwined double D decorated in relief, gilt edges. Leaves [8], 109, [2]. Allegorical plate and 109 maps. Last blank leaf is missing. Under the title the typographic data “Antverpiæ, Philippo Gallæo execudebat Arnoldus Coninx”. Ex Libris Jacques Teutsch pasted on the inside cover. The title page and the last Index are reinforced. Slight traces of wear on binding, with spine of 19th century and little more defects (very slight stain in the bottom margin of leaf 24 and a small hole in the outside margin of leaf 16).
