NIEBUHR, Carsten.
Paris, Brunet, 1779

Nuova edizione francese, figurata.

Paris, Brunet, 1779

New French edition, illustrated. The work is illustrated with two beautiful figurative title pages engraved on copper by Le Mire after original drawings by Marillier, as well as 25 plates, including maps, floor plans, views, costumes, and various examples of Arabic script, two of which are in Kufic script. The large fold-out chart in the first volume shows the family tree of the ruling house of Sana’a from the expulsion of the Turks from Yemen until 1763.
This work presents the findings of a Danish scientific expedition to Arabia (1761–1767), led by five scholars—including the mathematician and astronomer Carsten Niebuhr (1733–1815), the sole survivor of the journey—at the behest of the King of Denmark. The expedition, initially conceived to “illustrate certain passages of the Old Testament,” quickly evolved into a full-fledged multidisciplinary scientific expedition (geography, natural history, linguistics, ethnography).
Here we have the firsthand account of the expedition written by Niebuhr, the sole survivor. The first volume is an abridged translation of Niebuhr’s "Beschreibung von Arabien" (1772), a description of the original expedition to Yemen. The second volume includes excerpts from his "Reisebeschreibung von Arabien und andern umliegenden Ländern" (1774–78) and is almost entirely devoted to the peoples of Arabia and the Persian Gulf, with a brief account of his return journey from India, via Muscat and the Gulf, to Bushire, and from there overland to Europe.
Niebuhr provides rigorous documentation based on direct observations, local accounts (from merchants, Jewish scholars, and representatives of various sects), and notes from his deceased companions. The work reveals a previously unknown Arabia, where unprecedented religious practices (such as an emerging sect in the province of Elred or unique circumcision rites), social customs (polygamy, levirate marriage, tribal nobility), and occult knowledge (natural magic, divination) coexist. Niebuhr also sheds light on historical enigmas, such as the location of biblical cities or the Israelites’ crossing of the Red Sea, while correcting old errors (the “flying serpents” of Basra, the locusts). Natural history is not overlooked: the author describes rare plants (such as a manna similar to that of Sinai) and cultural prohibitions (taboos related to clothing or agriculture).
Mourier's original translation has been revised and corrected by Guignes, particularly with regard to Oriental terms.
