EURIPIDES. Tragoediae septendecim [Titolo in Greco e Latino].
Venezia, Aldo Manuzio, febbraio 1503

Editio Princeps. Rara edizione Aldina stampata in magnifici caratteri Greci. Lowry: “Exceptionally important.” Contiene 18 opere, quattordici stampate qui per la prima volta e quattro per la seconda, e in un testo molto più accurato. Nel titolo sono indicate solo 17 opere: l’ultima, Hercules, fu aggiunta alla fine del secondo volume. Volume I: Hecuba, Orestes, Phoenissae, Medea, Hippolytus, Alcestis, Andromacha, Supplices, Iphigenia Aulidensis, Iphigenia Taurica. Volume II: Rhesus, Troiades, Bacchae, Cyclops, Heraclidae, Helena, Ion, Hercules. Questa prima edizione di quasi tutte le sue opere superstiti (Elettra rimase inedita fino al 1545) ha certamente garantito la sopravvivenza della maggior parte del teatro storico greco. Questo Euripides è composto con i caratteri greci più piccoli e migliori, usati per la prima volta da Aldo nel suo Sofocle sei mesi prima: sono incisi meglio dei precedenti e hanno meno ‘legature’, risultando chiari e leggibili anche a un occhio moderno.

2 Volumi in 8vo. 160x95 mm. Legatura in pelle del XVIII secolo, fregi in oro ai dorsi. Carte [268], carte D4, PH6 e 2H6 bianche; [190], carte 2S10 e 2Y6 bianche. Caratteri greci, romani e corsivi, spazi iniziali con lettere guida, Colophon ‘Venetiis apud Aldum, mense februario 1503’, Registro e Ancora Aldina alla fine di entrambi i volumi. Iscrizione a matita sul foglio di guardia anteriore di ogni volume ‘Alan G. Thomas'. Tracce d’uso alle legature e ai Frontespizi, alcune velature di umidità.

Editio Princeps. Rare Aldine edition printed in magnificent Greek type. Lowry: “Exceptionally important.” Contains 18 works, fourteen printed here for the first time and four for the second, and in a much more accurate text. Only 17 works are listed in the title: the last, Hercules, was added at the end of the second volume. Volume I: Hecuba, Orestes, Phoenissae, Medea, Hippolytus, Alcestis, Andromacha, Supplices, Iphigenia Aulidensis, Iphigenia Taurica. Volume II: Rhesus, Troiades, Bacchae, Cyclops, Heraclidae, Helena, Ion, Hercules. This first edition of nearly all his surviving works (Electra remained unpublished until 1545) certainly ensured the survival of most of Greek historical drama. This Euripides is set in the smallest and finest Greek type, first used by Aldus in his Sophocles six months earlier: they are better engraved than the previous ones and have fewer "bindings", making them clear and legible even to a modern eye.

Two volumes in 8vo. 160x95 mm. 18th century leather binding, gilt decorations on the spines. Leaves [268], leaves D4, PH6 and 2H6 blank; [190], leaves 2S10 and 2Y6 blank. Greek, Roman and italic type, initial spaces with guide letters, Colophon ‘Venetiis apud Aldum, mense februario 1503’, Register and Aldine Anchor at the end of both volumes. Pencil inscription on the front end paper of each volume ‘Alan G. Thomas'. Traces of wear on the bindings and title pages, some dampstains.
