Prima e unica edizione di questo raro erbario interamente inciso. Contiene oltre 2.200 xilografie di fiori e piante, cereali, ortaggi e frutti coltivati in Europa, nonché alcune piante esotiche (mais, ravanelli, zucche, meloni, cactus, palme, ecc.). Queste xilografie, stampate due per due su ogni pagina di questo corposo volume, riproducono le illustrazioni del Neuw Kreuterbuch, pubblicato da Tabernæmontanus presso lo stesso editore tra il 1588 e il 1591. Non contengono testo esplicativo, se non i nomi latini e tedeschi delle specie raffigurate.
Jacob Diether, 1525–1590, noto come Jacobus Theodorus in latino e soprannominato Tabernæmontanus dal suo luogo di nascita, Bergzabern, è uno dei "padri della botanica" tedeschi, solo leggermente meno famoso di Leonhart Fuchs e Otto Brunfels. Viaggiò per tutta Europa, studiando a Strasburgo, Padova, Montpellier e infine a Heidelberg, dove conseguì il dottorato in medicina. Nel frattempo, si dedicò alla botanica, alla raccolta e alla catalogazione di esemplari di piante.
Le sue Eicones plantarum sono il frutto di una vita dedicata alla botanica. Secondo Johnston, l'album potrebbe fungere sia da iconografia per gli artisti che da guida sul campo per i botanici, essendo più facilmente trasportabile e maneggevole rispetto ai due grandi volumi in folio del Neuw Kreuterbuch.

4to oblungo, 180x220 mm. Legatura del XVIII secolo, pelle di vitello marmorizzata, dorso decorato con motivi grotteschi, tagli rossi. Pagine [8, compreso Frontespizio], 1128, [15, Index Latino e Tedesco], 1 bianca. Oltre 2200 xilografie con didascalie in latino e in tedesco.
Dorso accuratamente restaurato, normali fioriture dovute alla carta, leggera macchia di umidità ai margini, strappo al margine di pagina 1123.

First and only edition of this rare, fully engraved herbal. It contains over 2,200 woodcuts of flowers and plants, cereals, vegetables, and fruits grown in Europe, as well as some exotic plants (corn, radishes, pumpkins, melons, cacti, palms, etc.). These woodcuts, printed two by two on each page of this substantial volume, reproduce the illustrations from the Neuw Kreuterbuch, published by Tabernæmontanus by the same publisher between 1588 and 1591. They contain no explanatory text, other than the Latin and German names of the depicted species.
Jacob Diether, 1525–1590, known as Jacobus Theodorus in Latin and nicknamed Tabernæmontanus after his birthplace, Bergzabern, is one of the German "fathers of botany," only slightly less famous than Leonhart Fuchs and Otto Brunfels. He traveled throughout Europe, studying in Strasbourg, Padua, Montpellier, and finally in Heidelberg, where he earned his doctorate in medicine. Meanwhile, he devoted himself to botany, collecting and cataloging plant specimens.
His Eicones plantarum are the fruit of a life dedicated to botany. According to Johnston, the album could serve both as an iconography for artists and a field guide for botanists, being more portable and manageable than the two large folio volumes of the Neuw Kreuterbuch.

Oblong 4to.180x220 mm. 18th-century marbled calf binding, spine decorated with grotesque motifs, red edges. Pages [8, including titlepage], 1128, [15, Latin and German Index], 1 blank. Over 2200 woodcuts with Latin and German captions. Spine carefully restored, normal foxing due to paper, slight damp stain in the margins, tear on lower margin without loss on page 1123.
