Prima edizione nella rara tiratura di Cavellat. Opera pioneristica di anatomia comparativa, con 158 magnifiche illustrazioni di uccelli. L'opera è suddivisa in sette parti: la prima sull'anatomia e la fisiologia degli uccelli; la seconda sui rapaci; il terzo sugli uccelli che nuotano; il quarto sugli uccelli costieri; il quinto sui galliformi; il sesto su corvi e specie simili; e il settimo sugli uccelli canori. La seconda parte comprende anche un capitolo sulla falconeria. Belon decise di classificare gli uccelli secondo la loro morfologia e modo di vivere, elaborando le illustrazioni sulla base delle osservazioni fatte durante i suoi numerosi viaggi. Cerca così di identificare e descrivere le varie specie conosciute. Questo tentativo di classificazione, così come l'iconografia, divenne un riferimento fino al tempo di Linneo. Le sue illustrazioni frontali dello scheletro di un uomo e di uno scheletro di un uccello (pp. 40-41) devono essere annoverate tra le grandi icone del progresso rinascimentale e della ricerca umanistica.

Folio. 325x212 mm. Legatura in bazzana con fregi dorati e titolo su tassello al dorso, tagli a spruzzo rosso. Pagine [28], 381, [1, Colophon]. Sul verso del frontespizio ritratto di Belon. Marca tipografica su tutti i 7 Frontespizi, numerose iniziali xilografiche su 6 righe, carattere Italico e Romano. In totale 161 xilografie nel testo, inclusi il ritratto dell’autore, 2 scheletri e 158 grandi raffigurazioni di uccelli. Ex libris di Paul de Saint-Victor e di H. Gallice incollati sul contropiatto. Nota di possesso coeva al primo frontespizio cancellata. Tracce d’uso alla legatura e al Frontespizio generale, internamente sporadico foxing, buon esemplare.

First edition in Cavellat’s rare issue. A pioneering work on comparative anatomy, featuring 158 magnificent illustrations of birds. The work is divided into seven parts: the first on the anatomy and physiology of birds; the second on birds of prey; the third on swimming birds; the fourth on coastal birds; the fifth on galliformes; the sixth on crows and similar species; and the seventh on songbirds. The second part also includes a chapter on falconry. Belon decided to classify birds according to their morphology and way of life, basing his illustrations on observations made during his numerous travels. In this way, he sought to identify and describe the various known species. This attempt at classification, as well as the iconography, became a standard of reference until the time of Linnaeus. His frontal illustrations of a human skeleton and a bird skeleton (pp. 40-41) must be counted among the great icons of Renaissance progress and humanistic inquiry.

Folio. 325x212 mm. Full leather binding with gilt decorations and title on a label on the spine, red sprayed edges. Pages [28], 381, [1, Colophon]. On the reverse of the title page is a portrait of Belon. A printer’s device appears on all 7 title pages, along with numerous woodcut initials arranged in 6 lines, in Italic and Roman type. In total, there are 161 woodcuts in the text, including the author’s portrait, 2 skeletons, and 158 large illustrations of birds. Ex libris by Paul de Saint-Victor and H. Gallice pasted on the half-title page. A contemporary ownership note on the first title page has been erased. Signs of wear on the binding and the general title page; sporadic foxing inside; a good copy.
