8vo, 198x115 mm. Legatura coeva in pelle marmorizzata, dorso con fregi e motivi floreali in oro, titolo su tassello in marocchino rosso, fogli di guardia policromi, tagli rossi. Pagine XVI, 392. Antiporta incisa in rame con ritratto di Erasmo, moltissime illustrazioni xilografiche nel testo. Ex libris araldico incollato al contropiatto. Difetti alla legatura, bell’esemplare con ampi margini. 

Rara e bella edizione figurata, con le illustrazioni tratte dai disegni originali di J. Holbein. Si tratta dell’edizione originale della traduzione in francese di Jean-Charles Laveaux, 1749-1827. Il ritratto in antiporta, da disegno di Holbein, è inciso su rame da S. Granicher; le illustrazioni nel testo comprendono 82 figure, incluse 6 a piena pagina. Opera impressa con gli eleganti caratteri del celebre tipografo svizzero Wilhelm Haas, 1741-1800. Questo è uno dei pochi esemplari stampati su carta forte detta ‘Olandese’, la più ricercata; appartenuto a Léon Duchesne de La Sicotière, che pone il suo Ex libris araldico nel contropiatto.

8vo, 198x115 mm. Contemporary marbled leather binding, gilt ornaments and floral motifs on spine, gilt title on red Morocco label, polychrome inside covers, red edges. Pp. XVI, 392. Copper engraved frontispiece with Erasmus’ portrait, a lot of woodcut illustrations in the text. Araldic Ex libris glued on the inside cover. Defects on binding, nice specimen with wide margins.

Rare and beautiful illustrated edition, with illustrations from the original drawings by J. Holbein. This is the first edition of the French translation by Jean-Charles Laveaux, 1749-1827. The portrait in the frontispiece, from a drawing by Holbein, is engraved on copper by S. Granicher; the illustrations in the text, including 82 figures, of which 6 full-page. Work printed in the elegant type of the famous Swiss printer Wilhelm Haas, 1741-1800. This is one of the few specimens printed on stiff “Dutch” paper, the most sought after; it belonged to Léon Duchesne de La Sicotière, who placed his heraldic Exlibris in the inside cover.
