The series shows the sad events that afflicted Lorraine in 1633 when the French besieged Nancy. The tragic compositions reflect the state of mind of an ailing Callot, who in his last years of life witnessed the tragic end of his country. The edition was edited by Israel, Callot's friend: in the legend at the bottom, a poetic description of the scenes depicted in three couplets in rhymed couplets.
