4to oblungo. 270x330 mm. Legatura del XVIII secolo in piena pelle bruna marmorizzata, fregi e titolo in oro sul dorso “Gallaei icones var.” Frontespizio figurato e 40 tavole di cui 38 incise da H. Goltzius, H. Wierix, A. Collaert e altri dai disegni originali di Stradanus. Opera divisa in 4 parti, numerate: Frontespizio, 4-17; 1-8; 1-8; 1-8. Tavola n. 13 controfondata, tracce d’uso e alcune macchie nei margini. 

Prima rarissima edizione, seconda tiratura. La serie di Stradanus raffigura i cavalli di Don Giovanni d'Austria, Governatore Generale dei Paesi Bassi dal 1576 al 1578. Nei Paesi Bassi, Stradanus disegnò la collezione di cavalli di Don Juan da diverse regioni d'Europa. Le tavole che riproducono i suoi disegni originali sono eseguite da numerosi incisori di spicco, tra cui Adriaen Collaert, Hieronymus Wierix e Hendrik Goltzius; le incisioni di Goltzius, di eccellente qualità, compaiono con la sua firma nella terza e quarta parte, distinguendosi nettamente dalle altre per qualità e vivacità. 
I cavalli sono inseriti in paesaggi che ne riflettono le origini (ad esempio, lo sfondo del napoletano è il Golfo di Napoli), sebbene Stradanus osservasse i suoi soggetti in un maneggio interno. La tavola 17 raffigura la famiglia dei Centauri.
In questo esemplare il Frontespizio non è numerato, tutte le tavole sono numerate (4-17, 1-8, 1-8, 1-8); le tavole si trovano quindi nel secondo stato.

Frontespizio figurato e 20 tavole incise in rame. Frontespizio in Primo Stato, Tavole nel Primo e nel Secondo Stato, alcune numerate nella didascalia sotto l’immagine, altre con numero entro l’immagine, altre ancora senza numero. Frontespizio e prime due Tavole controfondate, tracce d’uso e alcune macchie sui margini. 

Magnifica serie con incisioni di Hendrick Goltzius e Philippe Galle, dai disegni originali di Jan van der Straet. Titolo entro elaborata bordura sormontata da armi con aquila bicipite e stemmi medicei con allegorie varie, armature e prigionieri. 20 incisioni sulle gesta vittorie militari dei Medici, alcune rappresentano le gesta di Giovanni dalle Bande Nere. La serie fu probabilmente progettata dallo Stradano già nel 1580 prendendo spunto dai cartoni per gli arazzi medicei e gli argomenti trattati nelle decorazioni delle sale di Palazzo Vecchio a Firenze, in particolare dal soffitto della sala dei Cinquecento. I disegni definitivi in controparte di alcune tavole sono conservati al Rijksmuseum, altri all'Albertina di Vienna e al Louvre.

4to oblong. 270x330 mm. 18th-century binding in full marbled brown leather, gilt ornaments and title on spine ‘Gallaei icones var.’ Illustrated title-page and 40 plates, of which 38 are engraved by H. Goltzius, H. Wierix, A. Collaert and others from original drawings by Stradanus. Work divided into 4 parts, numbered: Title-page, 4-17; 1-8; 1-8; 1-8. Plate no. 13 reinforced on back, traces of wear and some stains in the margins.

Very rare first edition, second issue. Stradanus' series depicts the horses of Don Juan of Austria, Governor General of the Netherlands from 1576 to 1578. In the Netherlands, Stradanus drew Don Juan's collection of horses from different regions of Europe. The plates reproducing his original drawings are executed by a number of leading engravers, including Adriaen Collaert, Hieronymus Wierix and Hendrik Goltzius. Goltzius' engravings, of excellent quality, appear with his signature in the third and fourth parts, clearly distinguishing themselves from the others in terms of quality and vividness. 
The horses are set in landscapes that reflect their origins (e.g. the Neapolitan's background is the Gulf of Naples), although Stradanus observed his subjects in an indoor riding stable.  Plate17 depicts the Centaur family.
In this specimen, the titlepage is not numbered, all plates are numbered (4-17, 1-8, 1-8); the plates are therefore in the second state.

Illustrated title-page and 20 engraved plates on copper. First state title-page, plates in the first and second state, some numbered in the caption under the illustration, others with numbers within illustration, still others without number. The titlepage and the first two plates are reinforced, traces of wear and some stains on margins.

Magnificent series with engravings by Hendrick Goltzius and Philippe Galle, from original drawings by Jan van der Straet. Title within elaborate border surmounted by arms with double-headed eagle and Medici coats of arms with various allegories, armour and prisoners. 20 engravings on the military victories of the Medici, some depicting the exploits of Giovanni dalle Bande Nere. The series was probably designed by Stradano as early as 1580, taking inspiration from the cartoons for the Medici tapestries and the subjects covered in the decorations of the rooms of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, in particular the ceiling of the Sala dei Cinquecento. The final counterpart drawings of some panels are in the Rijksmuseum, others in the Albertina in Vienna and the Louvre.
