GLAVANY, Jacques; Fils - RIVET Fils ainé. Carteggio di 42 Lettere tra Francia e Costantinopoli.

Importante e inedito carteggio fra alcuni esponenti della Società Rivet Fils di Marsiglia e Jacques Glavany Fils di Costantinopoli: riguarda la liquidazione di alcuni affari intrattenuti dalla Società francese a Costantinopoli. Si tratta principalmente di debiti contratti da Jean-Joseph Lemoine, affarista belga, da Damat Gürcü Halil Rifat Pasha e da Ahmed Fethi Pasha. Nel primo documento, con parte di lettera a Ph. Rivet senza data, compare la firma autografa di Jacques Glavany Fils, che comunica: «dis-je que sa hautesse payera ses dettes».
Jacques Glavany Fils si fa carico di recuperare i crediti e comunica gli sviluppi delle trattative : le notizie si ricavano dalle lettere fra Philippe e C. Rivet, e da alcune copie integrali delle lettere inviate da Glavany. Compare anche, nelle trattative, François Frédérici, imprenditore belga che si occupava di commercio a Costantinopoli, nonché altri personaggi a Costantinopoli e a Carcassone.
Di notevole interesse la presenza in questo carteggio di due alti esponenti del Sultanato Turco. Nella lettera a Philippe Rivet (Marseille 13 Juin 1845), si comunica che J. Glavany fils che reca notizie sui due debitori: ‘nous annoncant l’entree de l’Escadre Turque commandee par Halil Pacha’; ‘ahomet fathi Pacha … aussi beau-frere de l’Empereur’.
Damat Gürcü Halil Rifat Pasha, c. 1795 –-1856, fu ammiraglio e statista; Ahmed Fethi Pasha, 1801 - 1858, maresciallo, ambasciatore e industriale ottomano, appartenente alla comunità musulmana cretese, nel 1839, Ahmed tornò a Costantinopoli per l'incoronazione del sultano Abdulmejid I e per sposare la sorella di Abdulmecid.
I Rivet appartenevano a una famiglia di facoltosi armatori: divenuti molto ricchi nel XVIII secolo con la tratta degli schiavi dall’ Africa all’America, avevano diversificato i loro affari nella prima metà del XIX secolo, con il commercio dal Sud America, la raffinazione dello zucchero e, da quanto si ricava da questo carteggio, con investimenti finanziari e prestiti ad imprenditori. 
I Glavany erano un'importante famiglia di mercanti levantini che svolse un ruolo significativo nel commercio e nella diplomazia a Costantinopoli per secoli.

GLAVANY, Jacques; Fils - RIVET Fils ainé. Correspondence of 42 Letters between France and Constantinople.

Important and unpublished correspondence between several members of the Rivet Fils Company of Marseille and Jacques Glavany Fils of Constantinople: it concerns the settlement of certain business transactions conducted by the French Company in Constantinople. The correspondence primarily concerns debts incurred by Jean-Joseph Lemoine, a Belgian businessman, Damat Gürcü Halil Rifat Pasha, and Ahmed Fethi Pasha. The first document, with part of an undated letter to Philippe Rivet, bears the handwritten signature of Jacques Glavany Fils, who states: "dis-je que sa hautesse payera ses dettes."
Jacques Glavany Fils takes charge of recovering the debts and communicates the progress of the negotiations: the information is gleaned from the letters between Philippe and C. Rivet, and from several complete copies of the letters sent by Glavany. Also appearing in the negotiations is François Frédérici, a Belgian businessman who operated in trade in Constantinople, as well as other figures in Constantinople and Carcassonne.
Of note is the presence in this correspondence of two high-ranking members of the Turkish Sultanate. In the letter to Philippe Rivet (Marseille, June 13, 1845), J. Glavany, son, reports the news about the two debtors: "We are announcing the entry of the Turkish Escadre commandee par Halil Pasha"; "ahomet fathi Pasha ... aussi beau-frere de l'Empereur" (The Emperor's brother).
Damat Gürcü Halil Rifat Pasha, c. 1795 - 1856, was an admiral and statesman; Ahmed Fethi Pasha, 1801 - 1858, Ottoman marshal, ambassador, and industrialist, a member of the Cretan Muslim community, returned to Constantinople in 1839 for the coronation of Sultan Abdulmejid I and to marry Abdulmejid's sister.
The Rivets belonged to a family of wealthy shipowners. Having become very wealthy in the 18th century through the slave trade from Africa to America, they had diversified their business in the first half of the 19th century, including trade from South America, sugar refining, and, according to this correspondence, financial investments and loans to entrepreneurs.
The Glavanys were an important Levantine merchant family who played a significant role in trade and diplomacy in Constantinople for centuries.
