Vol. 1: Antiporta con ritratto di Piranesi inciso da Polanzani, Frontespizio a stampa, tavola di dedica incisa a doppia pagina con testo 'Utilitati Publicae' (secondo stato dopo la cancellazione della dedica di 'Lord Charlemont'), Pagine 10 (Prefazione, Imprimatur, Opere di Piranesi, Avviso ai lettori), pp. XI (Spiegazioni e Osservazioni), Pagine 40, pp. 13, così ripartite: pp. III (Indice o sia Spiegazione), IV (Indice), III (Indice), una bianca, II (Repertorio). 44 tavole incise, numerate I-XLIIII, di cui 5 doppia pagina, 1 grande tavola su due fogli ripiegata, 2 tavole ripiegate su 1 foglio e 30 tavole a pagina singola con due immagini.

Vol. 3: Frontespizio inciso, Antiporta incisa su doppia pagina, 54 tavole, numerate I - LIV (compresi titolo e Antiporta), di cui 42 a doppia pagina ed una grande tavola ripiegata a doppia pagina su 2 fogli (quattro tavole sono di Girolamo Rossi e una di artista anonimo);
Vol. 4: Frontespizio inciso, Antiporta incisa a doppia pagina, elenco dei soggetti inciso, 57 tavole (compresi titolo e Antiporta ed elenco).
In totale, Ritratto di Piranesi di Felice Polanzani, datato 1750, 6 Iniziali, 2 vignette e 218 tavole, tutto inciso in rame.
Ex libris araldico incollato al contropiatto “ex Bibliotheca Koeffringanea”. 
Ottimo stato di conservazione, esemplare di grande freschezza, fogli con ampi margini, in barbe. 

Rarissima prima edizione dell’opera più importante di Piranesi. Questa impresa monumentale, che richiese otto anni di attento studio e scavo da parte di Piranesi, consolidò la sua reputazione di principale protagonista dell'archeologia romana. Il volume I spiega la struttura urbana dell'antica Roma, illustrandone le mura, le difese, gli acquedotti e i monumenti pubblici. I volumi II - III comprendono i progetti della Camera Sepolcrali e sono dedicati ai vasti resti di sepolcri intorno a Roma. Il volume IV si concentra sulle imprese eroiche dell'ingegneria romana documentando i ponti e le strutture monumentali come la Curia Hostilia, la sottostruttura del Tempio di Claudio, il mausoleo di Adriano (Castel Sant'Angelo) e il Teatro di Marcello. 
Hyatt Mayor: “After two hundred years, the work still remains the vastest picture book of buildings and antiquities in Rome. Almost half the plates record things that have since vanished or been further damaged. It is the first book that attempted to reassemble objects that had been found and then scattered. The big plate of the Roman water system was the first painstaking reconstruction of far flung and complicated ruins, and alone cost him six months of drawing, digging and measuring. This book also went farther than previous attempts to interpret ancient remains in the light of ancient texts, and especially in the light of Vitruvius' description of Roman engineering practice.”
I titoli incisi a doppia pagina dei volumi 2 e 3 de Le Antichità Romane di Piranesi mostrano l'artista come il più visionario degli archeologi classici. John Wilton-Ely osserva che Piranesi utilizzò anche opere di altri artisti, principalmente nei volumi II e III.

In total, Portrait of Piranesi by Felice Polanzani, dated 1750, 6 initials, 2 vignettes, and 218 plates, all copperplate engravings.
Heraldic bookplate glued to the inside cover "ex Bibliotheca Koeffringanea".
Excellent condition, a very fresh copy with wide margins and uncut.

An extremely rare first edition of Piranesi's most important work. This monumental undertaking, which required eight years of careful study and excavation by Piranesi, cemented his reputation as a leading figure in Roman archaeology. Volume I explains the urban structure of ancient Rome, illustrating its walls, defenses, aqueducts, and public monuments. Volumes II–III include plans for the Chamber of the Tombs and are dedicated to the vast remains of tombs around Rome. Volume IV focuses on the heroic feats of Roman engineering, documenting bridges and monumental structures such as the Curia Hostilia, the substructure of the Temple of Claudius, Hadrian's Mausoleum (Castel Sant'Angelo), and the Theatre of Marcellus.
