8vo piccolo. 145x88 mm. Splendida legatura del Secondo Impero di Jean-Edouard Niedree in Marocchino blu notte, triplo bordo filettato dorato, dorso con fasce e decorazioni in rilievo, dentelle interna, tagli dorati; firmata nel foglio di guardia interno. Fogli 39 non numerati, carattere Romano. 37 Grandi xilografie nel testo. Bell’esemplare.

Rarissima edizione della Vita di Gesù illustrata con 37 xilografie nel testo ispirate alla Piccola Passione di Dürer. In questa edizione le xilografie sono incise dal Maestro N.H., le cui iniziali compaiono nella raffigurazione di Adamo ed Eva (f. A4r); i versi di Chelidonius sono accompagnati da distici di Christiaen Stercke, detto Christianus Ischyrius. La serie della Piccola Passione venne pubblicata la prima volta nel 1511 con un testo composto da Benedictus Chelidonius (Chelidonius B., Passio Domini nostri Jesu, Norimberga 1511); notevole fu l'influsso artistico che quest'opera esercitò sugli artisti dell'epoca, per la drammaticità delle soluzioni figurative e formali, per la forte spiritualità, per l'unità pittorica delle composizioni. Le presenti xilografie, caratterizzate da una tranquilla intensità emotiva, sono chiaramente influenzate da quelle di Dürer. La stampa dell'Uomo dei Dolori seduto (f. D1r) è una versione invertita e ridotta di quella che compare nel Frontespizio della Passione di Dürer. Benedict Chelidonius, morto nel 1521, era l'abate del monastero benedettino di Nostra Signora a Vienna. Max Friedländer riteneva che Nicolaas Hogenberg, 1500-1539, dovesse essere identificato con il monogrammista N.H., ma questa teoria è stata accolta con riserva dagli studiosi successivi.
Esemplare in magnifica legatura di Jean-Edouard Niedree, 1803-1854, eminente legatore e doratore, il cui atelier era nel Passage Dauphine a Parigi.

Splendid Second Empire binding by Jean-Edouard Niedree in dark blue morocco, triple gilt rules edge, spine with bands and embossed decorations, internal dentelle, gilt edges; signed on the inside flyleaf. 39 unnumbered leaves, Roman type. 37 large woodcuts in the text. Fine copy.

Extremely rare edition of the Life of Jesus illustrated with 37 woodcuts in the text inspired by Dürer's Small Passion. In this edition, the woodcuts are engraved by Master N.H., whose initials appear in the depiction of Adam and Eve (leaf A4r); Chelidonius' verses are accompanied by couplets by Christiaen Stercke, known as Christianus Ischyrius. The series of the Small Passion was first published in 1511 with a text composed by Benedictus Chelidonius (Chelidonius B., Passio Domini nostri Jesu, Nuremberg 1511); this work had a notable artistic influence on the artists of the time, due to the drama of its figurative and formal solutions, its strong spirituality, and the pictorial unity of the compositions.
These woodcuts, characterised by a quiet emotional intensity, are clearly influenced by those of Dürer. The print of the Seated Man of Sorrows (leaf D1r) is an inverted and reduced version of the one that appears in the titlepage of Dürer's Passion. Benedict Chelidonius, who died in 1521, was the abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Our Lady in Vienna. Max Friedländer believed that Nicolaas Hogenberg, 1500-1539, should be identified with the monogramist N.H., but this theory has been met with reservation by subsequent scholars.
A magnificent copy bound by Jean-Edouard Niedree, 1803-1854, an eminent bookbinder and gilder, whose workshop was in the Passage Dauphine in Paris.
