In Folio; 323x220 mm. Legatura di fine Settecento in piena pergamena con decori neoclassici al dorso, tassello in marocchino rosso su cui è riportato il titolo con fregi neoclassici, tagli a spruzzo. Pp. (16), 297, (3), 216, (8). Frontespizio in rosso e nero, marca tipografica di Estienne in silografia, testo greco nella prima parte, latino nella seconda. Tre note di possesso al frontespizio che riporta anche la dicitura cancellata “Henricus Stephanus auctor damnatus, opus vero hoc permissum”. In fondo all’Indice vi è la seguente nota manoscritta “Hic liber permittitur iuxta appendicem adnovum catalogum Sanctae Inquisitionis. Salmanticae Die quarta mensis Julij Anno ibis” segue firma dell’Inquisitore. Buon esemplare con un foro causato dall’inchiostro al margine superiore del frontespizio, un lieve alone alle prime pagine, una traccia di tarlo restaurata al margine inf. fino a p. 59, un altro camminamento da pp. 223 a 295 nel margine esterno e da p. 153 della seconda parte fino alla fine nel margine inferiore (restaurato da p. 201 alla fine). Lieve ossidazione generale della carta.

Prima edizione di Estienne con il testo greco accompagnato dalla traduzione latina, che, sebbene attribuita a Valla nel titolo, fu condotta principalmente da Estienne stesso, autore delle note. Henri, nipote di Henri il vecchio e figlio di Robert Estienne, fu uno dei maggiori umanisti francesi del XVI secolo, autore della monumentale opera Thesaurus Graece Linguae. Adams T-666; Renouard, Estienne, 152-153; Dibdin, 506; PMM 102: "The text was first printed by Aldus in 1502. The edition of Henri Estienne, a member of the famous French family of printers, who corresponded with scholars as an equal, first came out in 1564. The edition cited (the second edition, 1588) was improved by the addition of a translation into Latin by Lorenzo Valla..."

In Folio; 323x220 mm. Late 18th century full parchment binding with neoclassical decorations on the spine, red morocco label with the title and neoclassical decorations, sprayed edges. Pp. (16), 297, (3), 216, (8). Title page in red and black, Estienne’s woodcut device, Greek text in the first part, Latin in the second. Three ownership notes on the title page which also reports the crossed out wording “Henricus Stephanus auctor damnatus, opus vero hoc permissum”. At the bottom of the Index there is the following handwritten note “Hic liber permittitur iuxta appendicem adnovum catalogum Sanctae Inquisitionis. Salmanticae Die quarta mensis Julij Anno ibis” followed by the Inquisitor’s signature. Good copy with an ink hole in the upper margin. of the title page, a slight stain on the first pages, a trace of woodworm restored in the lower margin up to p. 59, another wear from pp. 223 to 295 in the outer margin and from p. 153 of the second part to the end in the lower margin (restored from p. 201 to the end). Slight general oxidation of the paper.

First edition of Estienne with the Greek text accompanied by the Latin translation, which, although attributed to Valla in the title, was primarily done by Estienne himself, author of the notes. Henri, grandson of Henri the Elder and son of Robert Estienne, was one of the greatest French humanists of the 16th century, author of the monumental work Thesaurus Graece Linguae.
