AA.VV. Revue de l'horticulture belge et étrangère...
Gand, Bureaux de la revue, 1878-1887
A rare collection of this important horticultural journal, magnificently illustrated. The superb chromolithographs are by Pierre De Pannemaecker, a student of the botanist Louis Van Houtte, then professor of drawing at the Ghent School of Horticulture and illustrator for numerous botanical journals. The journal aimed to make horticulture accessible to all and sought to highlight valuable, neglected, or little-known plants, as well as common, easy-to-grow ornamentals. It therefore featured common species such as chrysanthemums, azaleas, roses, begonias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, tulips, petunias, clematis, verbenas, carnations, hyacinths, daffodils, cyclamens, irises, dahlias, and more, but also included more exotic flowers, particularly orchids, which were very fashionable in the second half of the 19th century and are widely represented in the illustrations.
