Rarissima edizione originale figurata. Il primo trattato di scacchi prodotto dalla scuola italiana: rivolto ai cavalieri che praticano l’esercizio delle armi e della guerra, il libro espone le regole del gioco e spiega le sei aperture preferite in Italia: molto spazio è dedicato alla difesa con i due cavalli. 
Le prime sette xilografie riguardano i diversi pezzi e la scacchiera: le rimanenti dodici, nella parte finale del libro, illustrano problemi di scacchi che in maniera sempre più complessa portano allo scacco matto.

Prestigiosa provenienza. Esemplare appartenuto a Lothar Schmid, 1928-2013, Grande Maestro di scacchi tedesco e collezionista di libri di scacchi. È ricordato soprattutto come arbitro capo in diverse partite del Campionato mondiale di scacchi, in particolare nell'incontro del 1972 tra Bobby Fischer e Boris Spassky a Reykjavík. Per L. 4to piccolo. 233 x 170 mm. Legatura coeva in carta rustica. Carte [4, compreso Frontespizio], 51 [i.e. 52]; ripetuta la numerazione delle c. 47-48, omessa la numerazione della c. 49. Segn.: [croce]4 A-N4. Frontespizio con stemma xilografico, Frontespizio e testo entro cornice ornata, 19 xilografie nel testo.  Ex libris di scacchi sul risguardo anteriore, di Lothar Schmid, Grande Maestro di scacchi. Tracce di usura alla legatura, internamente occasionali macchie, alcune più intense.

Very rare first illustrated edition. The first treaty of chess produced by the Italian school: aimed at riders who practice the exercise of arms and war, the book explains the rules of the game and explains the six preferred openings in Italy: a lot of space is dedicated to the defense with two horses .
The first seven woodcuts depict the various pieces and the chessboard: the remaining twelve, in the final part of the book, illustrate chess problems that, in an increasingly complex manner, lead to checkmate.

Prestigious provenance. This copy belonged to Lothar Schmid, 1928–2013, a German chess grandmaster and collector of chess books. He is best remembered as the chief arbiter in several World Chess Championship matches, particularly the 1972 match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky in Reykjavik. For L. Ex Libris on the inside cover by Lothar Schmid, Chess Grandmaster. Spine worn, but still solid, slightly soiled, internally occasional spotting, mostly slightly browned (occasionally heavier).
