Prima rara edizione. L’Homme corredato da notevole apparato iconografico, è dedicato al cervello e all’organo della vista e segna un significativo progresso nello studio della fisiologia. Per Descartes, le regole che governano la fisiologia sono le stesse che governano la matematica. L'opera, pubblicata postuma, è introdotta da una lunga prefazione del curatore Claude Clerselier, fedele amico di Descartes. Al trattato fa seguito "La formation du foetus", qui in prima edizione. Il volume si conclude con un approfondito commento su "l'Homme" e sulle figure che lo illustrano, di Louys de La Forge, medico e discepolo di Cartesio.

In-4to. Legatura coeva in piena pelle marmorizzata, cornice di filetto a freddo sui piatti, dorso a nervi con fregi in oro, roulette sui lati dei piatti, tagli rossi. Pagine [68], 448, [8, Indice, Errata], con 49 figure incise in xilografia nel testo di ottica e di anatomia. Marca tipografica al Frontespizio, Testatine, Finalini e Iniziali silografiche. Diverse note di possesso, una che dichiara la proprietà di un chirurgo di St Macaire. Note manoscritte sui fogli di guardia, note e iscrizioni sui margini, piccole macchie su alcune pagine.

First rare edition. The Homme, accompanied by a remarkable iconographic apparatus, is dedicated to the brain and the organ of sight and marks a significant progress in the study of physiology. For Descartes, the rules that govern physiology are the same ones that govern mathematics. The work, published posthumously, is introduced by a long preface by the editor Claude Clerselier, a faithful friend of Descartes. The treatise is followed by "La formation du fetus", here in the first edition. The volume ends with an in-depth commentary on "l'Homme" and the figures that illustrate it, by Louys de La Forge, a doctor and disciple of Descartes.

4to. Contemporary binding in marbled calf, gilt ornaments on spine, gilt edges. Pp. [68], 448, [8, Index, Errata], 49 woodcut illustrations in text of optics and anatomy. Woodcut printer’s device on titlepage, headpieces, endpieces and initial letters. 
Several notes of ownership, one declaring ownership of a St Macaire surgeon. Handwritten notes on the endpapers, notes and inscriptions on the margins, small spots on some pages.
